“But you didn’t hear it from me,” he told the crowd during the Warner Bros. “Book of Eli” panel. It’ll be for a 2011 release.
The convention center’s roof will land somewhere in La Jolla later this afternoon. Christopher Nolan is fuming somewhere.

Dear God, I hope that’s not bullshit. Please let it be true. Please.
What!!
Now that I think about it this is a tad confusing: does this mean Nolan’s not coming back? I know he’ll be busy next summer with Inception, and they usually film these Batman movies during the summer. Unless of course Gary Oldman’s talking about pre-production stuff going on during that time.
I guess we’ll find out in due time.
!!!!! =)
Nick over at CHUD.com is reporting that the “fine folks at Warner Bros,” along with Oldman, said that Batman 3 shoots later in 2010. So did just Oldman say it or individuals from Warner Bros. too? This is key.
When does Inception start shooting?
No conspiracy theories guys the news is the news. Next year. Done.
As far as I know shooting on Inception started like a month ago for a 2010 summer release. No schedule problems there for Nolan…
Yeah I was thinking so. Exciting, I think there’ll be an official anouncement on the final day orso.
Who announces their decision first– Chris Nolan, or Brett Favre?
See Kris, I knew there would be a Batman 3 announcement at Comic Con. : ) I just didn’t think it would be from Gary Oldman. He and Michael Caine forgot to read the gag order thrown down by Nolan and WB.
Give Oldman an Oscar already!!!
@ Dan:
The difference there is that millions will care about Nolan’s decision while only those within the Minnesota stateline will care about Favre’s.
Whoa, Kris. Book of Eli will be the 2011 release or B3? I missed that part of your post. Jett @ BOF is reporting that Oldman said that B3 is “at least two years away.” Is that what you heard?
It will be interesting to see what they have to offer this time. Nolan will not have Heath (unfortunately) to elevate the film.
B3. Nothing in this post is about Book of Eli other than indicating where the announcement happened.
Meanwhile, for the fellow Bat fans, I’m sitting in a panel with Paul Dini, Greg Rucka, etc. about the current direction of the Bat books. Good stuff.
This really isn’t that surprising. Nolan is a one-film-at-a-time kinda guy. He’s focusing on Inception; that’s the only reason why we haven’t heard any Batman 3 news. The first draft of The Dark Knight was completed at the end of 2005; so if you do the math, the story for Batman 3 is probably done; Jonah Nolan and David Goyer must be the ones that are putting in the work right now; Chris would take a pass at a draft after he’s done with Inception, begin prep, and start shooting in 2010. Oldman’s statement is completely believable. As fans, we are reluctant to believe anything because of how GOOD Dark Knight was. Trust me, in the end, a guy like Chris Nolan can do one better. And i’m sure he knows it.
Yeah, that 2011 thing in your post is quite confusing. Every other site is saying Oldman said B3 would be released in 2012. These films take 2 years to make.
Thre is no way B3 could be released in 2011. Inception premieres in the middle of 2010. The math just doesn’t add up. 2012 is the date. Get your post corrected, lazy journalist.
Nah, it would be 2011. They would shoot in 2010, and then do post-production work for a year like they did with TDK, so it would be out for a summer 2011 release.
Anyways, let’s hope we hear something from Warner Brothers soon to confirm things. I’m still excited for Inception.
This is funny because at the beginning of the week Jett at BOF said to look for an announcement this week. Coincedence?
CHIRS138. So nolan would give up all promoting obligations for Inception and just go right into shooting Batman? Highly unlikely. He has to be there to promote Inception, which is released in July of next year. In fact, he’ll be in post with Inception right up until release. So if they start shooting B3 in July of next year, that would only give them a year to shoot, do post, and get it ready for 2011. Seems to squeezed for my tastes.
I was wondering about how that would work out as well, but maybe they’ll start a little bit before summer. I think TDK started shooting in April of 2007 if I remember correctly.
But like I said, I’m hoping for Warner Brothers to confirm all of this. For all I know you may be right about it coming out in 2012 instead.
Summer 2011 is stacked, Spider-Man 4 and Thor in May, Green Lantern in June, and Deathly Hallows: Part 2 has the prime mid-July release date locked up. Would WB really try and squeeze a movie of B3’s magnitude in there?
I doubt WB would open this movie at anytime other than the summer, so 2012 just makes more sense.
I couldn’t care less one way or the other. It’s not like “The Dark Knight” really left you hanging or wanting all that much more in the first place…
Speaking English is speaking another language….
I sense a distinct troll accent.
Huh? I’ve been posting on this site for almost a year now. Just because I didn’t go geek crazy for “The Dark Knight” like the over-obsessive hyperbolic masses doesn’t mean my opinion is moot. And believe it or not, I’m sure there are others out there who really couldn’t give a shit whether “Batman 3” was coming out tomorrow or in 2056.
Batman 3 could go towards a christmas 2011 release.
I don’t know. I’ll believe it when I hear it from Nolan. Oldman “confirmed” a TDK video game last year and that never happened. I think he tends to hear things and misinterpret them sometimes. That, and I don’t see it shooting next year if Nolan is going to be shooting Inception next year as well. I think Oldman meant pre-production planning stages, not principal photography.
Regardless, like I said, I’ll believe it when I hear it from the horse’s mouth.
Speaking English: Oh, I didn’t mean to imply that you’re not a regular visitor here, but if you’re just going to pop onto a thread about a film you’re not interested in to play killjoy…it gives off a bit of a troll vibe, is all.
Some folks aren’t interested in Nolan’s Batman flicks, fair enough. So just ignore threads about them, and go on with your day.
SpeakingEnglish, you can go ahead and suck on my coogle sack. Hyperbole to you, not to all the people who loved it. So get the heck out of this discussion!
Let’s all not get too excited anyway. Oldman is just an actor in the film. I’m taking this with the tiniest grain of salt for now. Until I hear something from WB and/or Nolan. Then, I’ll get really excited.
“I’m sure there are others out there who really couldn’t give a shit whether “Batman 3″ was coming out tomorrow or in 2056.”
This post is a news item meant for the billions of OTHER people who actually do give a shit, English. If you don’t care, don’t comment. No one likes a wise ass or a debbie downer. Plenty of other discussions going on in other posts for you to engage if you like.
2011 is this come true will be one of the most intense years of all time. Thor, Spiderman 4, Batman 3, The Hobbit and the final Harry Potter, who else knows whats to come, 2010 isnt looking all that pretty right now though. The Tree of life is the only movie im looking forward to
AmericanRequiem,
Also, apparently Pirates 4 is looking at a 2011 release date.
Ooh, please move to 2012! Not only will anticipation be hot by then, but it won’t go the way that all the blockbusters that crowded summer 2007 went (opening huge then puttering out around $300 million….excellent, but less than what the potential could have been).
Of course, if the movie is GOOD, then I could give a rat’s about box office. The thing is is that box office is what put TDK on the Academy’s radar in the first place, aside from all the excellent reviews and Heath’s performance. I’d like to think that if this is another excellent film that the Academy would issue some sort of make-up nomination or win…they like doing that sort of thing.
Please god, let it be true, let it be true!
and yes.. I read somewhere else it is set- if Oldman is right – for a 2012 release.
