It was funny to me when the Academy made the announcement, because there was a lot of, ‘Oh, an obvious ploy by the Academy to bring in younger viewers.’ Yeah, duh. Is that a bad thing?
Jesse Eisenberg had some zingers, too.

Nicole Kidman is so funny, and so charming. Well-deserved nomination!
Jeremy Renner is a BAMF. Love that guy. Might actually get me to see MI 4.
Melissa Leo. Yikes.
What sort of precedent (if any) could one point to for this Leo fiasco? If I were on her team, I’d fire HER. She’s making her PR people look completely inept and without any ability to rein her in.
Wow, natalie came off as a real hipocrit. She’s all serious actress and doesn’t want to talk about clothes and is sorry that the questions are all about clothes and not the movies, but she never backs off from being in magazine covers, has desinged her own clothing line, is always playing doll in airbrushed editorials, and signes up for endorsement deals with super high end brands that are paying her millions.
If she doesnt want to talk about clothes and is all “serious actress who only discusses the movies”, why did she attend the SAG awards wearing 2 million dollars in jewlery?
What did Melissa Leo say that drew oohs/ahhs/nervous chuckles at one point, I missed it.
Loved Kidman, loved Renner, loved HBC, love Amy Adams.
Eating this up as I watch ….
Amanda, you do realize that when Natalie talks about clothes, she really means pregnancy right?
Also, you are capable of separating being on fashion magazines and constantly being interviewed about the same thing, right?
Yes, Pete, it would make sense if she had not made a huge deal out of advertising her pregnancy in all her acceptance speeches up untill the SAG awards.
why melissa leo yikes kris?
Wow Amanda, I saw you comment this on awardsdaily.com too, you must be really burned up about Portman, huh?
Natalie is in no way advertising her pregnancy. I would really like to know where you’re getting that from. She’s linking her experience of being pregnant to her experience of working on the set of Black Swan, because if you hadn’t noticed, they’re kindof connected. It’s not like she’s throwing it in our faces, she’s merely grateful for all the oppertunities the role of Nina has given her: married life, motherhood, and a chance to expand her choices as an actress.
And I applaud her for saying what she said. Her pregnancy shouldn’t affect the great performance she gave, whether it affects it positively or negatively. The performance should stand on its own.
How about some Michelle Williams yikes?
I was shocked Michelle Williams was so awkward! Haha
How many Oscar voters are at these lunchens?
Leave Melissa alone!
Nice dress of Kidman… TKS cast is funny… And where is Bale?
What did Leo say, I missed it.
Michelle Williams got asked the two worst questions ever. Not her fault.
Matsunaga,
Bale just started filming a movie in China-called The 13 Women of Nanjing
So nice of you RR… Thanks.. Too bad he couldn’t come…
I googled the film and it is directed by Yimou Zhang… Looking forward to that…
Another question, why did Mark Walberg attended the luncheon? I thought the luncheon is exclusive for Oscar nominees only? Maybe the cast of BP nominees can attend as well?
I think Melissa Leo just lacks social skills. She did admit that she grew up socially awkward. At least she is genuine and truly talented. I hope Academy Members will not sway their votes juz becuz of a questionable act(she cld be right u noe) she did. Nothing yikes about her for me.
And yes, Nicole Kidman is charming and she seems to resemble Jacki Weaver as she gets older ! And she seems to not care so much about fashion as in the past, ever since she had her daughter. Good for her.
matsunga, Mark wahlberg got nominated as one of the producers for The fighter.
Wahlberg is one of the 3 producers of The Fighter nominated for Best Picture-so he is a nominee this year.
I think MW had a BP nod as a producer
Jeremy Renner is my home boy; so down to earth and humble.
Amanda
Don’t get me started about Natalie Portman’s hypocrisy. That girl have said some pretty shocking things over the years; I can scratch my head and say go WHAT?
Thanks guys!
Jon rememberr when rachel weizs accepted her Oscar? She was visibly pregnant and when she was on stage, she gave a classy, elegant, mature, subtle, gracious and charming speech thanking her director, costars, crew, the original novel’s writer and all the great men and women who risked their lives to fight injustice, men and women much greater than herself according to her own speech. She didnt say a word about being pregnant.
Compare it i.to “aronofsky made me thin now he is indirectly making me fat” “my grandma gave birth to my mother my mother to me now i’m creating life he totally wants to sleep with me bizarre laughter” routine portman has been pulling off.
Helena bonham Carter who has a very personal, peculiar, eccentric, heterodox and original approach to fashion and Kidman were both asked questions about what they would wear and both answered in a fun, relaxed, friendly and polite way. No need for portman’s patronizing and rude attitude.
i think portman was all about parading and advertising and making a huge fuss about her pregnancy up until the SAGs. I think what stopped her were Benning’s comments on that roundtable about now convenient it was for her to be pregnant right on time for her oscar campaign. Portman was visibly bothered and unconfortable and maybe has since decided to tone it down.
I think that Jesse Eisenberg has really benefited himself the last two weeks. Not to win the Oscar, but he seems really likeable and funny on Jay Leno, SNL, the free Social Network documentary and now this luncheon. He seems so much more confident than he does with some of his roles. Maybe he has just been gaining confidence, but I can see him being able to pull of more roles now. Anyone else agree? I mean, I’ve read some Eisenberg interviews and I always applied his character’s awkward tone but having seen more of him in the last two weeks has removed that for me. His delivery is really good, too. He’s definitely won me over.
^@Brian- I totally agree. He’s been my Best Actor choice since day one. Even now, no one has surpassed him IMHO. And he’s become quite the charmer.
For someone who does have a real anxiety about doing interviews Jesse has really managed to always be entertaining and charming throughout the whole awards season. SNL was great but it was an acting job where he says himself he is most comfortable. He has really gotten used to doing all those interviews and was hilarious at the luncheon today. I’m really glad he got the recognition he deserved in an Oscar nomination and hope that this great part will hopefully lead to more great parts.
Amanda: Butthurt much? Lighten up.
It was Jesse’s remarkable performance that pulled me in “The Social Network” — not to say he was the only one who was great ‘coz the whole cast was great. But he completely charmed me in interviews no matter how awkward he is. The guy is adorable, an adjective that one would not normally use on a 27-year-old but for him it applies. His next role is that of a cute blue macaw in “Rio,” so I think people would be using the word “adorable” even more to describe him. I do hope he gets more “adult” roles in the future but for now, I have no problem watching his adorableness.
niec post amanda
Loving the dislike for Natalie Portman. She’s overrated, and that was just rude. Is there any way to fastforward this dumb video?
The moderators told the press to restrict their questions to questions about the nomination and the films. She was asked a dumbass question “Hey, how shitty does it feel that if you find a dress now, you’re gonna be too fat to wear it in a few weeks?” So she responded gracefully by politely asking them to, as stipulated by the moderator beforehand, keep it to questions about the films and nominations. Sorry if her calling out a dumbass reporter for asking a dumbass question offends you people so much.
This awards season is so angry and bitter. How bout we all just chill the fuck out and think about what we’re all bitching about? Jesus christ, people. Get a hobby.
I hope Natalie Portman wins just to see how much venom people will spew.
Gosh, how exciting this must all be for Hailee Steinfeld. Yes, we’ve had child nominees before, but I remember just how big the world seemed to me at that age. Hell, I won a dinky state geography bee at 14 and I thought that the world was my oyster because of that, so I can’t imagine just how great this is for Hailee. Win or lose, an experience like this won’t go wasted.
I hope Portman wins so that when she and Ballet K. Fed divorce, the alleged Best Actress Curse can continue.
@Brian
I do hope some Academy voters will have the same change of thought as you did.
I think it’s funny how personally you’re all taking this, lololol it’s awards season, alright? Portman is a Best Actress contender, not running for president. Chill out, aside from making movies, these people don’t have any bearing on your life whatsoever, so stop patronizing Natalie for every little mistake she makes. The reporters were supposed to have only 2 questions, limited to the film. She called out that one reporter who obviously wasn’t listening, big deal, don’t get all up in arms about it.
Afrika, nice to see you’ve migrated over here after being kicked off of Awardsdaily for the same behavior.
Agreed. Portman isn’t Miss Mary Sunshine. But the facts are: she’s pregnant, and she’s up for the biggest acting accolade there is. I think we can cut her just a little slack.
Mr. Tapley, can you please post this? I just stumbled upon the first released image of Meryl as Margaret Thatcher
http://www.thehollywoodnews.com/2011/02/08/image-meryl-streep-full-makeup-british-prime-minister-margaret-thatcher-iron-lady/
The resemblance is uncanny. I don’t want to jinx Meryl but she is coming on pretty strong in that photo. Do I smell accolades? so excited for this movie.
Mr. Tapley, my previous comment is stuck in moderation. I’m not sure, maybe it is because of the link I posted.
Eisenberg owned that room. And I love Colin Firth, but he’s been seeming like such a try-hard lately. He doesn’t seem like himself. He seems to be going out of his way to appear charming (whereas Geoffrey Rush’s charm is as effortless as ever). I am still, still hoping against hope for Eisenberg to pull off an Adrien Brody on Oscar night.
Anita
You want Eisenberg to win an Oscar for playing a witty and fast-talking nerd?
Brody won his Oscar because Jack Nicholson campaigned against himself to encourage a victory for the one actor in the category who was Oscar-free.
^ is that so?
/3rtfu11
Seriously? Nicholson is SO goddamn cool.
