In Contention

Tranquilo

I’ve been unplugged since last Wednesday, in the midst of some much-needed laptop-less, sun-soaking, ocean-wading, tequila-slurping and Mexicuisine-gobbling down time in Cabo, so forgive the absence.  A few notes, though.  The season kick-off for the Off the Carpet weekly will be Monday, August 30.  Anne and I will hold off another seven days on the Oscar Talk weekly (Friday, September 3).  And this piece from Scott Feinberg, about how “The Kids Are All Right” ended on paper (and should have ended on celluloid), is well worth your time.  Back to normal tomorrow.

Love the Spanish title for “Inception.”

I saw Kids Are all Right last night, and this link really hit on my problem with the movie. I thought, to be honest, that monologue was horrible. And I read the old one, the version that didn’t make the movie, and it changes the trajectory of the film in the EXACT way that I told a friend I wished it would go after we saw the film. (SPOILERS:) Paul’s abrupt exit from the film is weird, and then to tie everything in a pretty bow at the end of the film is too convenient for me.

I loved, LOVED, the first 4/5 of TKaAR. But at the film’s most important moment — this monologue — it fell completely flat. That’s inexcusable.

We forgive your absence. We encourage it, in fact.

i disagree that the kids are alright speech should be changed, putting his hat in the back of the car to take to school was enough and a subtle way of suggesting to the audience what will happen in the future

Did you heard about the complicated opening that Inception had in Mexico?….

The story is long so i’ll try to be brief.

The opening was scheduled july 23th but the week before was kind of hard. The two principal exhibitors in the country (Cinépolis and Cinemex) and Universal (Warner Bros left Mexico a year ago so Universal is the one charged to distribute their movies) had some issues with the date.
Shrek 4 was a huge success, it was almost in every screen across the country and represented a very big number ($$$)… and in the other hand, most of the people didn’t know what Inception was about; the expectation was high but Shrek 4 was more appealing.
At the end Cinépolis and Cinemex decided no to open Inception that week… many moviegoers were noticed about so they started to demand the movie on Facebook and Twitter, the demand was so high that in two days Cinépolis and Cinemex answered with a new opening date (july 30)… In the meantime Cinemark México said they would respect the original date.
So you got it… now Inception is the #3 movie in Mexico, behind Despicable Me and The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.

    Enjoy your vacations.
    Greetings from Mexico City.
