After a great debut and follow-up in 2006’s “Half Nelson” and last year’s “Sugar,” Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck are back with the Zach Galifianakis-starring “It’s Kind of a Funny Story.” The trailer hit Yahoo! Movies yesterday and it shows the sort of performance-piece promise we’ve come to expect of the filmmaking duo. Click on the image below to have a look or check out the embed after the jump.

Oh no. Nobody loves Sugar more than me but there are so many red flags in this trailer.
Looks quite fun.
Chad: It does have that “Luke and Brie” thing going on, I’ll give you that.
Sad to see Boden and Fleck slumming like this, but maybe they will come back strong next time.
Kier Gilchrist is the best thing about United States of Tara, so I’m intrigued
Hmmm that sounds like a dig but I don’t think I get it
Not really a dig. Just curious what red flags are here besides the presence of Galifianakis (for some).
Galifianakis can definitely go either way. But mainly its the animated interstitials, hip indie song and font. Hopefully they are selling it as something it’s not.
I think they’re selling it as something it’s not. Reminded of Away We Go (vis a vis the marketing).
They already told the movie. That’s the only not-funny part.
But I’ll see it however, because it somehow remembers me 500 Days of Summer. =)
For me, it is Galifianakis, but then you get Aasif Mandvi and Jim Gaffigan on top of it. I find all three funny in their respective regular routines, but they are not actors and it means they are either going to strain or play one-note characters.
Or, hopefully, Galifianakis, Mandvi & Gaffigan (whom I’ve not seen) will surprise us and stretch a little/some. Plus, it seems premature to count Gilchrist, Davis, Boden & Fleck out of the equation. I mean, if somebody had pitched Half Nelson or Sugar to you, wouldn’t you have expected the regular cliches/tropes?
In fact, from Sugar’s trailer, I kind of expected something closer to the expected mainstream baseball/sports movie than what it really was. Inspite of that, I saw it because of the writer/directors.
