Cédric Succivalli (AKA @OnTheCroisette), the first person you should be following for Cannes updates, just posted this tweet that will bring hope to the hearts of Cannes-watchers everywhere:
A new film is going to be added to the official competition today or over the week-end! Which one do you think it’ll be?
Before you ask, it won’t be “The Tree of Life” — apart from anything else, Alexandre Desplat’s presence on the jury would represent an unallowable conflict of interest.

I imagine it will be something American since only one yank title was chosen. “True Grit” isn’t ready is it?
Or maybe something like Julie Bertucelli’s “The Tree” (closing night film) has been bumped up?
This is oddly thrilling.
I’m hoping for Kelly Reichardt’s “Meek’s Cutoff,” which would bump up the American and female head-count, but it’ll probably be something I’ve never heard of.
I really hope it’s Julie Taymor’s “The Tempest”, although I won’t hold my breath…
Oh yeah, please be Meek’s Cutoff!!! That would be awesome for it to premiere at Cannes. For real though, isn’t it a little close to the festival to still be adding in Competition titles? I know I shouldn’t knock the festival just based on a bunch of movie synopses (sp?) that don’t excite me, but with all of the scheduling confusion happening so far I can’t help but feel that something has run amok with the selection this year.
What about Inception?
Unlikely, I should think.
Another possibility that comes to mind is Guillaume Canet’s “Little White Lies,” unless they feel they already have a sufficient French quota.
Toy Story 3 perhaps? But nah that’s not even a remote possibility.
Super 8.
It’s almost certainly not “Tree of Life,” but I doubt conflict of interest would necessarily be a problem. Benicio Del Toro is on the jury, and he’s a producer of the Inarritu film.
