The weary kind

Written by

Thanks to the concerned (or hopeful?) couple of readers who emailed to ask if I had “retired,” but I’m still around, and will chime in this weekend. After a season of nearly six months, you’ll have to forgive me for feeling a little like Faye Dunaway here, in my favorite Oscar-related photo of all time. Except I don’t have an award to show for it.

Faye Dunaway, the morning after her Oscar win, 1977

    Guy,

Did you watch the Sky coverage of the Oscars? Ihave to admit I think Winkleman does an ace job. The guests were also pretty good too – like the fact they take it seriously and that woman was nowhere near as irritating as usual. Managed to get up at 7.30 the next morning as well after turning in at half 5. Enjoyable night’s viewing.

Also, just seen Shutter Island which opened here yesterday. If Chad thinks it is the worst film he has ever seen the guy’s deranged.

Adam: Yes, we watched the Sky feed. We were all quite drunk and probably being bitchier than was strictly deserved, but I do quite like Claudia Winkelman. Ronni Ancona, however, will forever have to live down her description of “Fantastic Mr. Fox” as “stopgap animation.”

Man, Guy, you take five days off, and people think you’ve retired.

Seriously, though, did Kris die or something?

Kris has earned a vacation and then some.

Should we await for a review any time soon? I’d like that though I certainly don’t expect anyting. I know you are also tired.

He’s not *that* deranged. Shutter Island may very well be the worst Scorsese movie I’ve ever seen.

With all due respect, worse than The Color of Money?

Jim T: A review of what? Not quite sure what you mean.

Oh, I didn’t have anything specific in mind. I enjoy a good review almost regardless of the movie. Alice would be a reasonable choice but I wasn’t so sure you would want to watch it. But I was really just talking in general.

Oh, I see. We stick to reviewing films before their U.S. release, so I often don’t get to them in time. As soon as something notable comes along…

(For what it’s worth, I think “Alice” is awful.)

Well, that’s it! I was almost aching trying to decide whether I should see it or not. Now I’ve made up my mind. Thanks (In a kind of sad voice)

@ Cameron: I never thought I would say this, but yeah, I think Shutter Island is a lower low than The Color of Money.

Madness. SHUTTER ISLAND is second tier Marty up there with CASINO and AFTER HOURS. Babies.

I saw Shutter Island yesterday. I’ve read the novel and so I knew what was coming, but I still thoroughly enjoyed it. I think it will be considered a classic in 20 years or so.

    DiCaprio’s best performance in years.

Can I just say: that photo of Dunaway staring at her Oscar win in the aftermath of The Academy Awards being over; and contemplating her happiness/sadness/what-comes-next-ness …. I absolutely love it.

Exactly. It’s the whole Oscar season in a single image. Terry O’Neill is a genius.

Faye has so many films that have held up well over the years.
