UK critics honor ‘Up,’ Mulligan

Carey Mulligan in An EducationThe London Film Critics’ Circle Awards may be the most prestigious of British critics’ honors (not saying much, admittedly), but there are critics in the rest of the country too. These regional writers have their say in the Richard Attenborough Awards, which held their fourth annual ceremony last night.

Last year, the Attenboroughs stuck very much with the consensus, but they made some bolder calls this time, handing their film of the year honors to “Up,” while “Moon” star Sam Rockwell took Best Actor honors. (Well, it’s nice that he has something to show for his career-best performance.)

Carey Mulligan was a double winner, earning both Best Actress and Rising Star awards, while a handful of public-voted awards proved that Brits still like Harry Potter — but also that some of them saw “Moon.”

Not exactly the most significant awards of the season, but fun nonetheless. List of winners (via Screen Daily) after the cut.

Film of the Year: “Up”
Director of the Year: James Cameron, “Avatar”
Actor of the Year: Sam Rockwell, “Moon”
Actress of the Year: Carey Mulligan, “An Education”
Screenwriter of the Year: Jason Reitman and Sheldon Turner, “Up in the Air”
Rising Star of the Year: Carey Mulligan

PEOPLE’S CHOICE

British Film of the Year: “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince”
Film Score of the Year: Nicholas Hooper, “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince”
Best New Filmmaker: Duncan Jones, “Moon”
Best Use of UK Locations: “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince”

Aw hell yeah. Apart from Up, I love these awards.

Also good to hear some mention for Half Blood Prince’s score.

That’s weird. Sam Rockwell doesn’t appear in the list of nominees here:

I checked other websites and he doesn’t appear. What am I missing?

These are not the London Film Critics Awards. Up wasn’t even nominated for Film of the Year. These are the Richard Attenborough Awards voted by the regional media of the UK.

Carey Mulligan, so predictable. Nice surprise to see Sam Rockwell winning this.

I wish this Harry Potter ban convert this to Oscar nominations for Visual Effects, Cinematography and Art Direction… I hope…

Now isn’t that a very good choice for Film Of the Year! Though director of the year is a bit unfortunate. But the rest of the choices are fine.

And I think half blood prince managed to loose the Best New Filmmaker award because fans could sadly not vote for it in that category.

Red wine: Half-Blood Prince couldn’t win Best New Filmmaker because David Yates isn’t a new filmmaker. He directed the prior HP installment (“Order of the Phoenix”), and he also did some great work for British TV (“State of Play”) and HBO (“The Girl in the Café”).

I’m a huge fan of “Half-Blood Prince”, but I’m actually indifferent toward Hooper’s score, which I felt was too restrained, especially compared to Patrick Doyle’s brilliant work on “Goblet of Fire”. I’m excited that Alexandre Desplat is taking over for “Deathly Hallows”.

“Up”, eh? A refreshing choice, and one that I can get behind.

Desplat is scoring Hallows? That’s brilliant news Jeremy! I’m definitely looking forward to it then (personally, I thought HP #6 was the best of the lot)

He’s definitely scoring Part I. There’s still a rumor that John Williams will come back for Part II, but I’d wager on Desplat scoring both.
