I’d say Mr. Karger is a little late with his Oscar/Globe disconnect piece. It’s something most people have known for years.

A WSJ blog critical of ‘Avatar’ – What a shocker!!!

That article was really nothing more than literary masturbation.

    It made very little argument.

Steve Pond is saying what I’ve been saying for a long time. If the nominees go as he expects them to, I for one wouldn’t hesitate for a second about dropping Avatar in slot 10. I can’t honestly see anyone putting The Hurt Locker at the very bottom. Basterds or Up in the Air either, to a lesser extent.

I wish everyone would read Molly Haskell’s essay comparing GWTW and AVATAR. I agree with her – AVATAR may be game changer but I am so very sad that it is a movie that hinges on big “dicks” trying to outshoot other big “dicks”. It is a sad reflection of our times and our cultures and any amount of magical special effects and charming heroines does not make up for the fact that it is basically a shoot-em-up movie for boys.
