Sigourney Weaver stopped by The Ed Sullivan Theater last night to talk “Avatar” with David Letterman. My jaw dropped when she explains that the Weta guys spend 47 hours of manpower per each 1/24th of a second in translating the data received from the motion-capture sensors. Wow.
Check out the clip below, and after the jump, Conan O’Brien has a bit of fun with the Na’vi language.

47 hours per 1/24 second? Is that possible?
It’s probably computing hours for rendering so it’s not literally 47 consecutive hours.
Haha, I saw that on Conan last night. Hysterical. NERD. SUPER NERD. SAD.
And Conan is probably gonna be sent packing February 1st, if he doesn’t just walk. Apparently Leno’s getting moved back to 11:30. Because of course the time slot was the problem, not Jay. EXTREMELy SAD

So, if there’s about 100 minutes of mo-cap, that 47 hours per 1/24th of a second would translate to about 1100 man-hours per second. Which means about 66,000 per minute. Which means 6.6 million for 100 minutes. Which would mean that more than thirty thousand people each put in 50 solid 40-hour work weeks on the mo-cap. Which seems…improbable.
