Apologies for the lateness getting these up. I decided to sleep in and I’m sure Guy had better things to do. These, as ever, are schmoozed and bought and paid for, as usual. You don’t need to look much further than Clint Eastwood’s nomination (when his film couldn’t get into the Best Picture line-up) for evidence of that. So getting up at 5:00 in the morning just wasn’t on my list of priorities.
I am, however, happy to see “District 9” get another screenplay nomination, which keeps hope alive. And though expected (for reasons of both quality and celebrity), my favorite nomination is Robert Downey Jr.’s for “Sherlock Holmes.” I think it’s actually a masterful performance that deserves serious awards talk. But these are all critics citations in a bubble until we hear what the industry itself thinks via guild nominations, so it’s going to be varying degrees of the same old thing for a while.
In any case, here are the nominees are:

Morgan – I’ve thought about that too, especially with Mike Leigh scripts where the actors improvise to create the script. Sometimes, it’s really impossible to fairly judge the screenplay category. Probably all movies include some improvised lines that make the movie so much better. Also, the director can make cuts that dramatically alter how the screenplay is looked at.
joeyjoey — I wouldn’t nominate it for Best Pic, but I’d certainly give Gabby and Mo’Nique nominations and not Lee Daniels. I thought his tinkerings with the film were distracting, and at times (as Guy mentioned in his review, IIRC), bordering on insulting. It’s like Rachel Getting Married last year — the ego of the director standing in the way of a fantastic ensemble.
“can someone explain how precious can be nominated for best pic, best actress (sidibe) and supporting actress (mo’nique), but lee daniels is snubbed in the best director category?”
Because directing involves a lot more than eliciting performances from actors?
i would nominate gabby and monique but not daniels, his direction was way to much at time and was the reason this movie has all its backlash
Is anyone else kinda bummed out that The Road has been snubbed? Esp for Viggo as Best Actor?
And RONAN???
I’m starting to feel a Sandra Bullock win. The amount of love that is being sent her way is the kind of thing that can usually derail a worthy frontrunner in favor of a favorite star.
Streep (Julia) and Clooney will win because Hollywood wants them to win Oscars and the Globes will follow suit to cement their destiny and build on their campaigns. This makes the Best Actress Drama and Best Actor Comedy/Musical the big acting categories where there may be upsets, because the members will know they can pick whoever they want.
Simone – Yeah, I agree about Viggo. I’d put him there above Clooney and Maguire. I haven’t seen the rest of the actors in that category yet.
I just want “Modern Family” to win. That is the funniest show on TV right now. “Community” lost some spark.
I guess I’m the only one who thought “Duplicity” was underrated.
I also would’ve liked to have seen Lee Daniels get nominated for Director, but I still think he get the Oscar nomination. The nod for Emily Blunt is a bit of a surprise as well, I can’t say I’m frustrated by it because I haven’t seen the film.
I keep getting the feeling that The Road has been buried… not just for awards, but for release in general. Did it ever go wide?
The Bright Star shut out pains me.
A truly beautiful and emotionally subtle movie.
The best actress in a young Victoria was Miranda Richardson and her role was small.
Hey ho – I guess it is about profile. I think Blunt could be the fifth nominee but she will be like Keira Knightley for Pride and Prejudice.
So will their five BP’s be nominated by the Academy as well amongst the final 10?
As for the rest, some small surprises. As for the rest, that anouncement was truly a messy piece of garbage.
***Considering Kris had Bolt as his no. 1 film of last year***
Except he didn’t. “Slumdog Millionaire” was hi no. 1 film.
his*
2nd whoever said Modern Family was the funniest show on TV.
“It’s always Sunny in Philadelphia” is the funniest show on TV!!!
“Bought and paid for”.
That truly sums it up. These just feel so random and all over the place. More like a guest list of people invited than a role-call of merit. I honestly wonder if the artists themselves truly feel happy to be nominated here.
This and the BFCA almost seem petty, and inane. And the Oscars manage to have some dignity inspite of themselves.
End of rant. I should probably get back to preparing for my exams.
Does anyone think that Nine might be on shaky ground in the Best Picture category? It’s been getting a critical DRUBBING so far.
Nine is such a pretentious film. It’s only getting nominated because it’s a big production -this year’s Benjamin Button-.
Nine is the big productin that always gets nominated. Be it 5 or 10 nominees.
It great to see Inglorious Basterds getting some love. It’s finally gotten to the point where even Kris Tapley has to recognize it as one of the top ten potential noms. When I saw it back in august, it was the best film and it still hold the top spot in my book. I have yet to see a film that come close to as good this year. I’m crossing my fingers on Avatar.
Speaking English,
You’re right, my bad. Nevertheless, Bolt was his no. 2 choice which just as well proves my point that Kris is hardly someone who has anything against animation!
I see only one person hear who mentioned Breaking Bad. Also – no Big Bang Theory? Entourage instead of Big Bang Theory?
I think the reason why Jennifer Carpenter as Deb in Dexter is constantly robbed is because (my friend’s theory) she is so good and convincing as Deb there is very little traace of “acting” going on. She completely inhabits the role and the voting body probably thinks that’s her in real life.
Helped:
Avatar, obviously
Inglourious Basterds, which can no longer be denied as a serious contender
Paul McCartney
District 9
(500) Days of Summer
It’s Complicated
Sandra Bullock
Michael Stuhlbarg
Hurt:
Jeremy Renner
Alec Baldwin
Mariah Carey (any heat at all is gone now)
The Lovely Bones
Judi Dench
Saoirse Ronan
A Serious Man
Samantha Morton
Weird, isolated incidents:
Tobey Maguire
RDJ
Emily Blunt
That fucking hateful Avatar song
@ 76 Marshall1: Totally agree with you on Jennifer Carpenter. Her acting, especially the break down after Lundy (as mentioned above) gets shot was desperately brilliant and brave … it left me breathless with my jaw on the floor. I think a lot of people find her character very off-putting b/c she (the character) is so brash and offensive that it makes the viewer very uncomfortable to watch her or even sympathize with her.
YES!!! I LOVE the “Baaria” nomination! Such a stunning film! I also love to see “Broken Embraces” being nominated for Best Foreign Language Film!
I think Avatar and Nine will win the Best Picture awards.
That’s exactly why I love Deb–she’s so in-your-face, and Carpenter place her with complete selflessness.
@SHAAAARK: I don’t think Renner is hurt (teehee) much, nor is Stuhlbarg helped. Renner makes me think of Melissa Leo, Richard Jenkins, Laura Linney, Ryan Gosling, Amy Adams–you see where I’m going with this? He’s that indie performance that is wrongfully snubbed for a bigger name. SAG will be the real tell….And they better not rob him =(.
@Me.: I think Up in the Air will be winning–most nominations rule and all. (Last year was an anomaly. Before that, it was Atonement, Babel, Brokeback Mountain, The Aviator, TLOTR:TROTK, and so forth. Granted, like last year, there’s potential for an upset, but I would consider that the frontrunner for the win.
I am LOVING the Julia Roberts nomination. People complaining about it a) haven’t seen “Duplicity” and really should do so pronto or b) just don’t like her, ala Sandra Bullock. She’s fantastic in the film.
Also loving the score nom for “The Informant!” So hope that goes to Oscar as well.
Generally everything else is as expected. Disappointed for “Bright Star” though. That Best Supporting Actress lineup sure looks like it’ll go unchanged for Oscar, doesn’t it?
Oh! That Emily Blunt nomination is freakin’ lazy! I figure the HFPA members fell asleep during “Young Victoria” and put her name down anyway because she’s Emily Blunt and she’s always good. ‘cept she’s not here.
If Sandra Bullock wins for the Proposal, the Golden Globes is officially a joke
She probably won’t.
However…she is *so* winning for The Blind Side.
LOTR ROTK wasnt the most nominated film at the Globes that year. It was Cold Mountain!
Oops! My bad. Thanks for the correction. So aside from 2004-2007, the general rule was the most-nommed won.
I have been lucky enough to see most of the films released this year (save Avatar), and this is how I think it’s going to go down at the Oscars:
BEST PICTURE
(500) Days of Summer
An Education
The Hurt Locker
Inglourious Basterds
The Messenger
Nine
Precious
A Serious Man
Up in the Air
Up
BEST DIRECTOR
Kathryn Bigelow, The Hurt Locker
Lee Daniels, Precious
Clint Eastwood, Invictus
Jason Reitman, Up in the Air
Quentin Tarantino, Inglourious Basterds
*I understand I didn’t place Invictus into the Top 10, but I have a feeling the Academy will reward Eastwood with a nomination this year, to make up for not nominating either of his two films last year.
BEST ACTOR
Jeff Bridges, Crazy Heart
George Clooney, Up in the Air
Colin Firth, A Single Man
Morgan Freeman, Invictus
Jeremy Renner, The Hurt Locker
BEST ACTRESS
Emily Blunt, The Young Victoria
Carey Mulligan, An Education
Saoirse Ronan, The Lovely Bones
Gabourey Sidibe, Precious
Meryl Streep, Julie & Julia
*Despite all of the buzz, I still do not believe the Academy will reward Sandra Bullock with a nomination.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
Woody Harrelson, The Messenger
Cristian McKay, Me and Orson Welles
Alfred Molina, An Education
Stanley Tucci, The Lovely Bones
Christoph Waltz, Inglourious Basterds
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS

The Hurt Locker
Inglourious Basterds
A Serious Man
Up
BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
An Education
District 9
Precious
A Single Man
Up in the Air
The Eastwood prediction could be replaced with James Cameron. Same goes for Avatar in place of (500).
very disappointing that Bright Star has nothing. Where the hell is their campaign? It seems non-existent and at this rate Cornish will miss an Oscar nom
