Sometimes you come across a blog post that pretty much says it with more precision than you ever could.  One of the day’s joys when they come along.

Actually, with a seasoned AD and producing team, I think I could make a better X3.

I liked the film. It was enjoyable. Messy, but fun.

I didn’t think it was that bad either. But I’m a Ratner apologist. Never saw Rush Hour 3, but that one aside, I don’t think Ratner’s ever made a BAD movie. You heard me… And my friend who went to the New York I Love You premiere the other night said Ratner’s was her favorite short…

I have always loved the Rush Hour films (Chris Tucker screaming like a 9-year-old girl NEVER gets old!) And don’t forget Red Dragon!… a close second behind Silence in the pantheon of the Hannibal Lector films. Now I certainly think he didn’t do anything to build on Bryan Singer’s films, but the visual effects in X3 were AMAZING! With the house flying and truck flipping… wizardry! And by the time the Golden Gate Bridge was floating I was nearly screaming “HOLY MOTHERFUCKING SHIT THIS IS AWESOME!” And to that I say “Bravo!” to Mr. Ratner.

It never ceases to amaze me how directors will hold up the box office numbers of their shitty movies as if that’s proof of their quality. Never mind aggressive marketing, brand names to attract established fans, low-competition weekends, and (in the case of films like X-Men: The Last Stand and Spider-Man 3) the anticipation in the wake of superior predecessors. Oh no, because it made over $400 mil, then it MUST be a masterpiece immune to criticism.

The only thing I liked about X3 was the fact that I got to see a live action Beast. My favorite superhero of all time!

I wouldn’t say the Ratner films I’ve seen are bad, but they don’t exactly provoke or move me in any way. I’d say he’s competent, but soul-less.

    Ratner is a hack, and I don’t apologize for disliking X-Men 3.

I realized comparing X3 to the previous 2 is similar to comparing the new Star Wars trilogy to the old trilogy… impossible! They’re two different approaches to the same universe. The Singer films really delved into the issues behind the characters and really explored them, while X3 was a complete visual feast not meant to move or influence invoke thought, just alot of pretty VFX. But you can’t deny that X3 worked as a visual feast! It blew me away, and it looked and sounded awesome… deserved to get VFX and Sound noms from AMPAS!
