I’m already on the record as thinking “Broken Embraces” is distinctly minor Almodóvar, but I’ll be damned if this sleek new trailer (available on Apple here) doesn’t foreground all its most beguiling features in one lovely package. If the film only had as much to say as it does to show, we’d have something truly special here.

Well, by that trailer, everything looks in place:
Penelope
Acting
Cinematography
Set design
Score
Mood …
I guess it’s the STORY that is letting people down, huh?
I thought the last third of the story let me down and I’m glad I saw “Women on the Verge…” recently, otherwise I might not have completely understood the end. Penelope is wonderful but she doesn’t have a classic arch to her performance. I bet if I really analyzed her performance, studying her individual scenes, I’d have more respect for what she did.
John: Bingo.
penelope is incredible with her performance. i hope almodovar gets a nomination.
I really loved Broken Embraces and I thought Penelope Cruz gave a pretty great performance. But I have to agree, the ending was sort of a mess. It could have ended at least three times. (but I have not seen Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, so maybe that’s sort of a clue?)
The film looks gorgeous. Almodóvar is always good with colors, specially red. And this is probably the most glorious Cruz has ever looked. What a pity it all doesn’t add up.
Well, almost every filmcritic tells that Broken Embraces is not a good film. I finally saw it and I think it’s one of the best films by Almodovar. So go and see it and don’t care for what critics say. The film is really involving, never boring and the actors are fabulous (especially Blanca Portillo). Enjoy!
Aaron – the film within the film is “Women on the Verge…” so I guess Almodovar was making a statement about his work and how he creates as an artist.
Well, at least everything but the new actors is “Women on the Verge…”
