In Contention

John August and ‘Go’

There are plenty of 10-years-later retrospectives going on this year.  a powerful year in cinema such as 1999 is bound to spark nostalgia.  Most recently we were discussing David O. Russell’s “Three Kings.” But over at MakingOf, there is a nice, brief chat with John August, screenwriter of “Go.”

Doug Liman’s “Swingers” follow-up was somewhat under-the-radar in 1999.  It certainly wasn’t an awards contender, but I always loved it.  And the soundtrack got its fair share of play my first year of college.  Take a look:

Go is a gem. They called it “Baby Pulp Fiction,” but I liked it more than the Tarantino. The best use of Taye Diggs, Scott Wolf and Katie Holmes to date. Not to mention Bill Fichtner and Jane Krakowski and Jay Mohr. AND Sarah Polley. And Timothy Olyphant…woof. Whatever happened to Desmond Askew? I need to watch this again. LOL

One of my all-time favourite films.

William Fichtner has never been creepier. Confederated Products!

Apparently, on the basis of his work on GO, Soderbergh hired editor Stephen Mirrione to cut Traffic, an editing oscar ftw.

Yeah, “Go” was a great film. It surprises me that it never really rose in stature of the years since it seems ideal for that treatment. I really felt it was ran in the same race as generation defining movies like “Reality Bites” or “Empire Records”, but I guess not. If anything it was too ahead of its time, since the indie didn’t become cool for young audiences for a years after “Go” came out.
