Goldfrapp meet Beatles in ‘Nowhere Boy’

Alison GoldfrappI meant to mention this just before I went on vacation in September, but it slipped my mind.

Anyway, adding to the many reasons for my interest in Sam Taylor-Wood’s “Nowhere Boy,” the John Lennon biopic that closes the London Film Festival on 29 October, is the promise of a score by electro-pop outfit Goldfrapp (probably best known Stateside for their 2005 hit “Ooh La La”).

The British duo, comprising musician Will Gregory and vocalist Alison Goldfrapp, revealed last month that they had almost completed the score, and would be recording string segments with a full orchestra at Abbey Road Studios in London. (An obvious tribute to Lennon, and a nice one.)

It’s not surprising that Taylor-Wood, who has previously collaborated with the Pet Shop Boys and Elton John on various projects, would once more turn to the pop world for her feature debut. Nor is it Goldfrapp’s first foray into film composing — you may remember their woozy, faintly menacing and rather lovely score for “My Summer of Love” in 2004.

Still, whereas that film was a cool, contemporary work that very much played into their signature sound, a period piece centered on an entirely dissimilar musical icon is another thing altogether. I’m intrigued to see what they come up with.

In case you aren’t familiar with Goldfrapp, here’s an example of the use of their work (a pre-existing track, in this case) in “My Summer of Love”:

I had completely forgetten the use of Lovely Head in My Summer of Love, and that they did the score for the film. That was a great choice.

Very interesting that they’re doing Nowhere Boy. I think Goldfrapp’s debut album ‘Felt Mountain’ is one of the top 10 albums of this decade. I would love it if they could squeeze Pilots somewhere into the film. My favorite song of theirs.

YES YES YES!!!!! I love me some Goldfrapp! I wish they were more well known in the USA b/c I would kill to see them perform live (especially during their Supernature phase). I think their music is extremely cinematic (and totally elevated the experience of My Summer of Love imho), and the thought that they are creating the score of an awesome film I am really excited about seeing makes me sooo happy! This is wonderful news :-)
