Mann and ‘Falling Soldier’

Falling Soldier

If Mann’s picture is a straight biographical drama it’ll be difficult to tackle this subject without taking a definitive stand on whether or not the photo was staged. I hope, then, that the film is less than standard from a biopic perspective, and tackles questions about the rigorous depiction of events versus creating propaganda for one group over another. Capa’s story is interesting, but seeing Mann get into deeper issues could make the movie really fascinating.

A good point from Russ Fischer’s re-reporting of the news that Michael Mann will be tackling a biopic of war photographer Robert Capa.  Mann (and friend Eric Roth, actually) tends to go out of his way to make things a little more complex, so hopefully he doesn’t have a “standard” biopic in him.

I’m not all that interested in how Mann handles the “Falling Soldier” event. After Public Enemies, I’m curious to see if Mann can really flesh out Capa so that we’re practically in his shoes. My hope is that the audience will care about Capa and his relationship with Gerda Taro.

    Capa’s life narrative seems “high-budget,” not “low-budget.”

I just don’t get Mann, or anyone’s fascination with him. To me he seems to make the same highly charged masculine conflict picture every time out no matter what the subject or material.

Yeah, I can’t think of another director that is anywhere near as overrated as he is. But that’s just my opinion.
