‘Avatar’ sequel a possibility, says producer Jon Landau

Sam Worthington in AvatarOkay, let me first connect the dots on how I came to this nugget: Le Film via /Film via MTV.  Now that that’s out of the way…

It goes without saying there will be a lot of people looking at the bottom line on “Avatar,” so any talk of a sequel is obviously silly until the film proves itself a success, which is what producer Jon Landau is getting at at the beginning of the following quote:

If the public likes Avatar, it’s a possibility. After all, here we are exploring the surface of the planet Pandora. The interior remains to be seen.

But now that it’s out there, clearly there seems to be more to this world than what Cameron ultimately put up on the screen.  His initial treatment was pretty massive, after all.  Who knows what he had to exclude?  But I’ve been getting the vibe for a while now that vested interests would love to sequel-ize this thing.  There are already toy tie-ins and a video game on the way, the obvious harbingers of a new franchise.

Anyway, we’ll keep an eye on it.

If this movie makes money and they DON’T make a sequel, that’s your story. Otherwise, there’s nothing to see here.

Tv-series á la Battlestar Galactica. I’ve seen only the latter’s first season (I just started watching it!) but the feel is kinda similar.

Is it just me or is Ice Age 3’s box office trajectory the most surprising of the year?

    Domestic: $195,429,976
    Foreign: $678,636,208
    Worldwide: $874,066,184

It is the third highest grossing film ever in foreign markets and the second highest grossing film of the year.

All about a squirrel chasing an acorn.

I don’t think Avatar will get past 500M worldwide.

More importantly He plans to do Battle Angel next. which, if they keep it R-rated, will be something amazing.

I don’t think any big budget film (on this scale) will ever be R-rated. Too risky. Rather settle for a Dark Knight PG-13

That Ice Age 3 thing is right on the money. Even if you detract the 3-D commission off the ticket price (20% orso) it’s still 700+ mln orso. Stunning indeed.

I don’t see Avatar doing any more than $150 mil domestic.
