“Solipsism” and Moore on Maher

Michael Moore in Capitalism: A Love Story

Last night, on Maher, [Michael Moore] talked about wanting to make a movie that was so outrageously honest that no studio would ever fund another one of his movies. Epic Fail, Mike. There is not a single thing exposed in the body of Capitalism: A Love Story that Jon Stewart, Bill Maher, David Letterman, and even Jay Leno haven’t already mocked… and mocked in a more funny way. No one needed a film to tell us that bailing out banks sucks and that people being thrown out of their houses – that they took insane loans on, of their own greedy accord, btw – at the same time feels like a shot in the gut. America gets it.

You used to convert. Now all you seem to want to do is to preach to the converted.

I truly love your work and believe in your gift, Michael Moore. But you need to get further out ahead of the news cycle or you become just another f-ing talking head for the liberals instead of the idiots of Fox News who do the same crap on the other side.

From David Poland’s dismissal of Michael Moore’s latest in a post titled “Solipsism: A Love Story” at The Hot Blog.  And from last night, Moore on Real Time, after the jump…

Poland is more or less on the money, except he’s a few years too late. Moore has been a predictable, self-aggrandizing, left-wing talking head for quite some time.

I’m still not sure I understand the predictions of this for BP.

Poland’s right 100% on this. Although I’ve liked all of Moore’s films before this (though not without their issues), this one is particularly wrong-headed, clearly not well thought-out, and borderline incoherent. If any other filmmaker’s name was on it, I can’t imagine this would be getting the reviews it is.

What is your opinion of Michael Moore’s style of filmmaking?

God bless Michael Moore and anyone else who wants to pick up a camera and try to tell a story. It is a lot harder than you think. – Ken Fuckin Burns.

Wow. Truly shocked at the comments here. This film is fantastic. Yes, it suffers from Michael Mooreisms, but the overall message of the film is pretty hard to dispute if you ask me. I mean, on the message. If you want to pic apart the film as a film (and I guess, on this site, that is to be expected) then sure, you can say this should have been like this, or he should have done that this way, etc etc, but really, the message is what counts here. So you think the late night hosts do a better job nightly? Ok, great. But that doesn’t negate the fact that Moore is DOING it, and that the message needs all the attention it can get. And I consider myself fairly informed, but there were depths to the deplorable actions of banks, big business tycoons and even members of our own government that I hadn’t heard before. But then, that’s me.

I enjoy Michael Moors documentaries, I truly do. When I watch them I do it not to inform myself on the topic but see his opinion–which is what documentaries are. The problem that many people have with his work is born from their inability to see the film objectively. Don’t take what he says to heart, just watch it and take from it what you want.

Can I like M. Moore, Bill Maher, David Poland, and loathe Ryan Adams, the obnoxious, fastuous, thin-skinned, little prick?

Honestly Kris I don’t see what Moore does and what many of these right wing hate mongers on the right are doing being the same thing at all. From my side of the fence Moore speaks from the heart were guys like Hannity and Rush vomit hate and divisiveness for the sole purpose of making a buck (multi millions) while dividing the country. It borders on evil in my opinion. Olbermann and Maddow almost exist to counter what these guys are saying. Take Hannity and those fringe guys off the airwaves and Keith and Rachel go away because they would have no real purpose. Some might disagree, but thats the way I see it.
There programs are to rebuttal Fox more than anything else.
Believe me, if Rubert Murdoch could make huge money selling the left side of things he would. Sadly there is more money to be made with right wing side. Wrap yourself around the flag and guys like Glen Beck get big followings. Stunning!
I don’t care if I know what Moore will say going in as I think what he says is important. I’ll be there opening weekend to support it.

Yes. Moore is a different documentarian these days, but I don’t think subtle originality was ever his thing…

And “Solipsism?” Dictionaries are beautiful tools! Calling Moore a solipsist or his movie solipsistic makes little sense, even accepting the rest of Poland’s argument is true.
