I’ll get into a review of “Precious” eventually, but for now, I have to just say, I’m stunned — STUNNED — that the Best Actress discussion hasn’t properly included Gabourey Sidibe so far. In so many ways it is the performance of the year. In so many ways.
More later.

Kris, I’ve been reading your twitter post so I know how you feel about the film. I CAN’T WAIT TO SEE THIS FILM!
So are you thinking…BEST ACTRESS, BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS, ADAPTED SCREENPLAY…what else?
Film Editing. DEFINITELY.
Picture, Director, Actress, Supporting Actress, Adapted Screenplay, Film Editing, MAYBE Cinematography, and Best Original Song.
Well, if it gets all those nominations, including Film Editing, wouldn’t you say it’s the early favorite for the win?
Nah, any other film could get as many or more nods. I don’t think we’re in any place to discuss winners. The landscape shifts too quickly.
When you guys post the news about Tempest being postponed, and Helen Mirren is out of lead actress, I wrote in the post about the girl from Precious might have a chance to sneak in a nomination (Now I know her name). I hope it continues to build on the buzz and delivers….i’m always afraid I put too much hope on it and it ended up disappointing (i.e. 500 days of summer, not that it’s not good, but not as good as I want it to be).
Kris, this doesn’t seem like the type of film to feature great editing. What made it so good?
Kris, you’re forgetting a major element in the Best Actress race that will work against her regardless of how good her performance is: hotness factor. If she can’t grace the cover of GQ half-naked, then she probably won’t win.
That’s probably why the discussion “hasn’t properly included Gabourey Sidibe,” though I imagine it will grace many year-end “In a Perfect World” lists.
But what do I know? I haven’t seen the film yet so she may be an instant front-runner.
I wouldn’t expect her to win. I’m talking nom.
If it’s between Gabourey and Mulligan, they will probably give Mulligan the win. But I suspect, it will more between Mulligan and Streep. But the little preview for the private live of pippa lee looks great, esp Robin Wright Penn.
And what about Paula Patton? I think she’s great in the trailer.
Don’t forget the Oprah factor as an exec producer.
Glad to hear you liked the film. I don’t know if you’ve read the book or not, but ever since I read it I haven’t been able to wait for this movie.
What do you think its commercial prospects are Kris?
I had a somewhat heated debate a few weeks back and I think even Tyler Perry and Orpah would find it difficult to widely market Precious.
8 noms, that would be very impressive indeed.
Strangely I am not really looking forward to this movie…but I wish MoNique and Gabourey well…
Kris…was Carey’s cameo any good?
I just saw on IMDB that this is her first movie role. Interesting.
I could see her being nominated in the “Best Actress” category. I think her profile will rise after the film is released. This year’s pickings in that category are relatively weak, IMHO, compared to previous years, and I think she could sneak in there as one of the nominees. Can she win? Not with Meryl Streep and Hilary Swank in the mix.
I can’t see her winning but if Precious is #3 in the Oscar tally I can see her getting nominated easily.
I see The Lovely Bones & Nine as the clear most nominated films.
I think Precious & Gabourey have a lot going. The edgy indie gets recognition but usually doesn’t win, she’ll be a newcomer on the ballot, the Oprah support (and other African Americans in the film industry can rally behind it) but the question is it too edgy or dark to fully get the Academy’s love for potential wins.
I see: Picture, Dir, L. Actress, S. Actress, Editing, Ad. Screenplay, Or. Song.
I’m really glad you liked it Kris, I had a feeling it was a special film and now I’m even more excited to see the film.
Don’t forget that once the bandwagon starts rolling, people will “remember” her (if the bandwagon rolls hard enough). Remember last year, when close to nomination time people started buzzing about Dev Patel for best actor cuz Slumdog was growing so big… and that was quite a stretch (nothing against him, good actor, good part. But not top-5, and not clear lead).
With Gabourey, once that buzz starts, it will be supported by a performance that is that good (from what weve heard) and is that big. So she could easily carry it all the way if the film’s buzz gives her a little push.
One way to start the discussion would be to actually include her in your predictions sidebar.
Smarty pants. She’ll be there next update, you can count on it. But she’s been nestled in our charts and contenders section for months, so we certainly haven’t ignored her. I’m just surprised that, since the film has been widely screened, that people haven’t been shouting her chances to the rafters.
Kris,
I am so glad you liked it. I loved it. The one thing about Sidibe’s performance and chances is that if the film affects you and you are affected by Mo’nique’s role…Sidibe has to affect you too and even greater. She is sure to get votes if the film does.
Better than Mulligan? Really?
I’m not surprised to read this after what I heard earlier from the Canadian gossip columnist I read (who happens to be an entertainment reporter for Canadian TV). She said that the buzz from pre-screenings of Precious for journalists in Toronto is extremely strong. She called the early buzz on Slumdog last year, and she said the performances from Sidibe and Mo’nique were drawing high praise this year. Mo’nique is now on my shortlist for Supporting, and I’m close to putting Sidibe in there for lead. Just have to see how the chips actually fall in Toronto.
Meryl Streep for Julie & Julia.
She is is way up there! As in Way up!
