‘Agora’ trailer

In yesterday’s inaugural edition of Oscar Talk, Kris and Anne Thompson discussed the bad buzz swirling around Alejandro Amenabar’s Rachel Weisz-starring historical epic “Agora,” which has been fruitlessly seeking a distributor since premiering at Cannes in May — and will continue the hunt at Toronto.

Right on cue, here comes the trailer, and … let’s just say that Anne’s prediction of a “noble failure folly” looks ominously on-target. I’ve loved much of Amenabar’s work, but if I could barely keep my eyes open through the trailer, it doesn’t bode well for the film. Your thoughts?

I think this looks really good. Could very well be one of those ‘overlooked’ films we talk about. Anemabar is a fantastic filmmaker. Extremely talented. So far, it seems everything he touches is great. I cannot wait for ‘Agora’. I truly feel it’s going to be something interesting, original and moving. But then again, who knows. Every filmmaker has his down moment(s).

I’ve already talked about this. The talk here in Spain is that the trailer is hiding what all the movie is about. It’s not an easy movie, problem is no one wants to buy because it’s NOT a commercial film. It’s like a masterclass of science, with a deeply complicated screenplay. Everyone who has seen it says that is quite out of the mainstream.

It could be a contender. The reaction here in Spain is that it is a very good film but not for all tastes. By the way, the score by Dario Marianelli is extraordinary.

    Why is it in English?

From the looks of th trailer anyway, it simply looks like another guys with togas storming a government building movie.

It seems a bit dated but the selling point of the trailer is Rachel Weisz who hasn’t had a movie that I thoroughly did not enjoy.

Because they are in Rome, specifically fourth century Rome. There wasn’t a lot of English being spoken.

So “Gladiator,” “Ben-Hur” and any number of English-language toga epics over the years should have been subtitled too? Come on, James.

I actually think it looks really intriguing. And I love Rachel Weisz.

All it needs is a campy villain, a catchy one liner and a spouse waiting in the afterlife and they’ve got themselves an Oscar contender.

I think too it looks very good. I also hear the movie was cut 15-minutes after Cannes, hopefully for the better.

    Looks terrible.

Hapatia was an atheist. Nuff said. It will make super-fundies apoplectic like “The Last Temptation of Christ” did. And she’s bedding her slave for godsakes, that’s a terrible no-no; since, I’ve heard, all slaves have large johnsons. Nay-sayers to this film, give the rest of us a break. Now’s the time for a Biblical epic that doesn’t kiss the butts of shallow thinkers.
    heh-LOH ! Your friend, Spartacus
