I’ll never cease to be astounded by the repeated attitude that films nominated for Oscars are all masterpieces. “It was great, but Oscars?…” is something that only makes sense coming out of the mouth of someone with no knowledge of Academy history.

This argument, valid though it is, falls on deaf ears so often that there needs to be a shorthand term for it. I propose “‘Chicago’ says whaaaa?”

All one needs to do is look at 1961, when The Alamo was nominated over Spartacus and Psycho for Best Picture, to see what AMPAS considers “Oscar-worthy.”

    Hats off to BurmaShave.

There’s nothing such as awards worthy. Everything is subjective and people just need to realise. No film is arbitrarily Oscar material or not until someone votes for it. http://encorentertainmnt.blogspot.com/2009/08/in-defence-of-oscar.html

Awards mean nothing, but when a genre film or just something that comes out of the blue is recognized then that is something to pay attention to. I’m not saying this right, but hopefully you get the idea. Examples would be like Silence of the Lambs, Fargo, Pulp Fiction, and City of God.

Yes, the academy are the people who honored Slumdog Millionaire and Crash in the last five years as being “the best picture of the year”.

I say this often myself, but when I do, I refer to films that SHOULD be Oscar material. I understand BurmaShave’s point, but just because someone utters these words doesn’t mean they are ignorant of the Academy’s incompetence.
