In Contention

Casting news galore

Michael ShannonLots of acting decisions being made today.  Despite the “holiday,” it’s all legit, too.  Well, I can’t vouch for /Film’s points us to the news that a trio of thesps joining Christopher Nolan’s “Inception” (each of them listed as “in talks”).  According to Variety, Cillian Murphy, Marion Cotillard and Ellen Page are circling the project (and I’m dying to get my hands on that script, by the way).  I wouldn’t mind seeing these three pan out.

Elsewhere, Michael Shannon joins Mickey Rourke as the second of this year’s Oscar nominated acting class to sign up on a comic franchise.  Shannon and “Arrested Development” star Will Arnett have both been cast in Jimmy Hayward’s “Jonah Hex” among an ensemble that already includes Josh Brolin (in the title role), John Malkovich and Megan Fox.

I’m stoked for Shannon even without knowing the specific role he’ll take in “Hex.”  Knowing the world of that comic book series, however, I expect he’ll find a nice home for one of his trademark off-kilter portrayals.  Arnett is a weird fit but, well, we’ll see.  I just want the movie to be good.  After “Watchmen,” studios will likely start scrutinizing the wisdom of comic book adaptations.  I don’t want something like “Hex” to come along, screw the pooch and do the very same thing to westerns.

his source was Variety…which is clearly linked on the page and has been since the second he posted it.

Obviously not “clearly” enough. I totally missed it, but thanks for clearing it up with such a classy tone. Go easy, I’ve been kooked up in a court house all day…slowly coming around to today’s goings on.

So did Cillian Murphy get Franco’s role? Hmmm…

Interesting that Nolan has Franco on his radar…perhaps Nolan will ask Franco again when he looks to cast the Joker for Batman 3.

There are much better choices, IMO. Thought Franco would be in my top 10 for sure.

I’m only a little skeptical about Marion Cotillard, but we MUST remember, that Christopher Nolan chooses his actors VERY wisely. I’m stoked!

According to Hollywood Reporter, Page will play a college grad/sidekick to Leo and Marion will play his wife.

I wonder how much screen time Marion will have playing his wife?

Ellen Page is a brilliant actress – from Hard Candy to Juno she can do anything really, but Marion Cotillard is very actorish….and very French. She was very amusing at the Oscars with her odd English expression. She’s certainly not a bad choice, but there are so many actresses who are more interesting than she is. I’d love to see what Cate Blanchett could do in a film like this – she’s currently busy wasting her time in Robin Hood.

    “….and very French.”

Which is a problem why, precisely? ;)

As for Ellen Page, I like her a lot, but I need more than “Juno” and “Hard Candy” to convince me she can do “anything.”

Leo and Marion? I like that pairing. I think she’s a terrific actress, and I’ve known about her since Taxi. Ellen Page though? We’ll see…

My dad is French, and I speak French fluently and used to live there. What the hell are you trying to say Serge? And Marion is a fine actress.

LA VIE EN ROSE contained one of the most ham-fisted and histrionic performances I’ve ever seen. She won for the usual “pretty girl goes ugly” thing. Julie Christie was robbed.

There’s nothing wrong with being French. My family is French (on my mother’s side)…I was half joking. Firstly, her Oscar winning performance was, as BurmaShave wonderfully articulates, “ham-fisted and histrionic”.

All I’m saying is that since English isn’t her first language (find the video from this year’s Oscars where she presented Best Actress) and she doesn’t exactly fit into the same mould as other actresses of her ‘calibre’. She starred in A Good Year (set in France), in Public Enemies her character ‘Billie Frechette’ is French, in Nine she plays an Italian (in Harvey’s mind what’s the difference?). I don’t think she can take on any role she wants as there are other considerations to be made…she’s not exactly interchangeable with any other American actress or English/Australian actress who can put on an American accent, unless her Frenchness is accomodated (or tolerated). Nor is she Eva green (I’d say 99% of the people who saw Casino Royale are oblivious to the fact that she is French- studied in England)

Also, Katie Holmes was in Batman Begins so there goes the argument about Nolan choosing his actresses wisely. Scarlett Johansson wasn’t that great in The Prestige, though Rebecca Hall was a major find. Hilary Swank wasn’t exceptional in Insomnia – unintentionally a bit too ‘Fargo-esque’ if you ask me.

Of course Ellen Page has a lot still to prove, but the intensity she displayed in Hard Candy will most likely translate well to a cerebral (LOL) thriller like this. Whether Cotillard’s actorishness will work well…only time will tell.

I like Marion quite a lot but her sudden explosion into all of these roles is quite baffling. I wish she would do more French movies instead of being lured into Hollywood.

As fine as an actress she is, for me she can never be like Binoche.
