I was amazed at the number of trailers I caught over the weekend for films I actually wanted to see. I’m usually rolling my eyes or, better yet, taking a refreshment and/or bathroom break, but I lit up a little bit.
The new “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” materials could really do no wrong for a guy like me at this point, though I’m dreading that release more and more. The whispers are ugly. Still, even if all the good stuff is in the trailer — it’s a hell of a trailer. Even fluff like “The Proposal” looks appealing at this point. And I’m totally on board for “Observe and Report” (which reminds me I need to address “Eastbound and Down” at some point).
All of this is a long way of coming to that new “Terminator Salvation” trailer I’m sure you’ve all seen by now. Maybe I’m alone, but this is one of the most exciting trailers I’ve seen in a long, long time. Of course NIN’s “The Day the Whole World Went Away” is put to great use throughout, but I was a little surprised at the idea of spilling a major plot point maybe a minute into the thing (which might not be that big of a spoiler in this age of AICN obssessive pre-release plot excavation — I can’t keep up).
Anyway, I’ve been amped up for the film for a long time, despite the expected lingering atmosphere of anxiety. I think we dodged a bullet with “Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines,” a film I actually respect quite a bit, but the potential for outright disaster is right there in front of our faces on this thing. Here’s hoping…

sorry, Kris — the new ‘Terminator: Salvation’ trailer has ‘Transformers’ all over it, which re-affirms McG’s quote during pre-production that that’s what he was looking for. The “Iron Giant” machine that appears at about 10 stories high looks out of place. Plus, if there is any slo-mo like in the final 15 minutes of Bay’s robot feature, I’m walking out.
“Observe and Report” looks funny, although the Paul Blart similarities ruin the appeal a little.
No mention of “Public Enemies” displaying Mann’s radically digital look? I think it’s a fine trailer.
Just remember when evaluating trailers how good “Watchmen” looked in front of TDK — look how that turned out…
I’ll get to Public Enemies in a separate post, though I’ve addressed some points in the comments section of another entry.
Fair enough on T4, but I thought it was the bee’s knees, item nine! And I don’t think there’s anything there that looks as MTV-ish as “Transformers,” but hey, to each his own.
Regarding trailers, as always, it’s a caveat. There was a time when “Pearl Harbor” looked to be one of the best films of all time.
Oh yeah, and fuck Paul Blart.
Public Enemies is going to be one of the best films of the year — just have a feeling.
The new Terminator trailer is indeed cool, but it’s got nothing on the new Transformers 2 ad. Now THAT movie is going to be item-9.
Also, the new Trek trailer is sweet. Wolverine does look pretty cool but the bad word we’ve all been reading for months is not good…

Star Trek’s new trailer is impressive.
So, is Terminator’s.
Transformers is boring as hell.
