Who are you pulling for?

Anyone want to come clean on soft spots for this contender or that?  Here’s just another space to get all of that off your chest.  You all know who I’m pulling for, probably to a fault.

I’m rooting for Taraji P. Henson, just because she’s emerged as the most sweet, non-Hollywood actress out there. And, oh yeah, because Eric Roth completely disserviced her character, which I think will ultimately cost her the award.

I’d love Mickey to win in Best Actor, if only to hear the speech, and because you have to give him credit for maintaining such a good personality this season.

When Kate Winslet wins, I hope they say they made a mistake, and the win is for Revolutionary Road. I hope Bruce Springsteen performs and wins for a song he wasn’t nominated for. I hope Gomorrah wins Best Foreign Film despite not being nominated.

    Oh … and Heath.

    Sean Penn *hires security detail*

Not that he has a chance in hell, but David Fincher…

In a year where so much seems to be written in stone, I hope PenГ©lope Cruz gets her Oscar. On the other hand I wish Alexandre Desplat could earn a surprise win.

That’s my two hopes for the night, as in most other categories my favourites are either not going to win, not nominated or winning anyway (here’s to you Mr Ledger).

I am pulling for “Milk” in all the categories it is nominated in. I would love to see Sean Penn win best actor, I know its a fight to the end between him and Mickey Rourke. I am really pulling for Sean to be the winner this evening.

For best actress, its a tough category. I love Kate Winslet, I am a big fan of hers. But I’m not sure she should win for “The Reader”. She has turned in much better performances in “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”, and “Little Children” to name a few.

I feel that the Academy should stop giving awards to actors beacuse they haven’t rewarded them until now. If she does win, I will be happy but I think she has done better work then in “The Reader”.

I am watching the Oscars to root for Penelope Cruz and Mickey Rourke. I want to see Michael Shannon and Anne Hathaway win, but that isn’t going to happen.

I would be very happy to see Happy-Go-Lucky or In Bruges pick up Original Screenplay, but it probably won’t happen either. I would also like to see The Class win Best Foreign Language film.

In Bruges for Original Screenplay would indeed make the night. The Class for Foreign Language would be awesome.

Beyond that, I’m pretty happy with the likely winners.

It would be thrilling to see Wally Pfister win, and Martin McDonagh.

I know I’ll probably be crucified for this but I’d love to see Angelina Jolie win. There’s not a snowball chance in hell of it happening but I loved that movie and can’t understand all the criticism it’s receiving.

Even though I’m lukewarm about the entire film itself, the cinematography for Button was just to incredibly to deny an Oscar. I hope it walks away witht the award.

Melissa Leo and Frozen River ♥. I loved her speech last night, too. She’s got such a great sense of humor–and obvious wild side. I hope that she returns in the future, even if only in supporting, to one day win it =).

I’m not ashamed to say that not only is The Reader my favorite film of the Best Picture nominees, it is my favorite film of 2008, period. Though it has no chance of winning, I’ll always be rooting for it. And as for Kate Winslet, she may have done better work in the past (mostly Clementine in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind), but no other actress, leading or supporting, did better work this year (and this includes Melissa Leo, who I absolutely adore and would deserve to win any other year). Give Kate the Oscar because she is the best person nominated. That is why she’ll win–she deserves it.

In a more perfect world, The Wrestler would have seen a lot more nominations, including Best Picture and Director. However, I can always hold out hope that the Academy will reward both of the film’s nominated performances–Marisa Tomei deserves the win, and what hasn’t already been said about Mickey Rourke? His is the best performance by any actor, regardless of gender, age, race, whatever. It is his time to shine, dammit.

Now, Academy members who vote in tech categories without having any clue what defines that category, I know you think that pretty colors and shaky cameras are the pinnacle of cinematography–hell, you proved that by rewarding the, admittedly, very good Pan’s Labyrinth over the unquestionably superior and more revolutionary choice of Children of Men. So, Academy, all I ask is that you make the right choice and put an Oscar in Wally Pfister’s hand tonight–there was no better photographed American film this year. (I stress “American”, as I would argue the best shot film, period, was Let The Right One In.)

Please don’t give Slumdog 9 Oscars. It’s a good film, but I can safely say that it doesn’t deserve to win in a single category, even if it did deserve the nominations. I know you’ll give them a lot, but come on, keep it reasonable. Make it 4 or 5, and I might go home happy.

I want Rourke and Cruz to win. If Penn wins, good for him cuz he was awesome too. If Davis wins, again, awesome. Rourke and Cruz win, especially the former, I’m bringing out the champagne, no jokes.

And, if Kate doesn’t win (God she should have been nominated for Revolutionary Road damn it!) — I’d love Anne Hathaway to win – who I honestly thought gave the finest female performance of 2008.

Really rooting for WALL-E in song, sound, and screenplay.

    Milk.
Gus Van Sant or David Fincher.
Anybody but Pitt in actor. Preferably Jenkins, but Rourke, Penn, and Langella are aces too.
    Meryl Streep or Anne Hathaway.
Heath. If there were to be an upset: Based on merit, Michael Shannon. But whoever would upset would get horrible backlash, so let’s hope not.
To be honest, I like all five supporting actresses, so I’m happy whichever way it goes.
    Martin McDonagh.
    Wally Pfister.
    The makeup of Hellboy II.
WALL-E in score, song, and sound.
    Also, Danny Elfman too.
Encounters at the End of the World
    La maison en petits cubes

Fingers crossed for at least one of these.

  17. Zak Avatar

    Mickey Rourke!

Meryl Streep! (would be an amazing upset)

    Viola Davis!

    and

    The Dark Knight for Cinematography!

  18. murtada Avatar

Viola Davis, for the performance that packed the most emotion this year.

  19. Kristopher Tapley Avatar

I might as well add my two cents here.

Obviously, I’m pulling for Mickey. But in the realm of upsets, I’m hoping Alexandre Desplat can win the original score trophy, Wally Pfister can take down the cinematography prize and “O…Saya” can steal the song Oscar. In the totally-not-gonna-happen realm, I’ll have a couple fingers crossed for “Bolt.” Sue me.

    Mickey for the win.
    In Bruges for screenplay.
    Pfister.

    WALL-E in all categories.
Kate Winslet for her brilliant performance in The Reader. I’m also rooting for The Reader to take Adapted Screenplay and Cinematography.
I’ll be rooting for The Class and Marisa Tomei also.

“Button” for Cinematography and Score, clearly the best.

“Milk” for everything. Sean, Gus, Dustin… give ’em all Oscars.

    “WALL-E,” both sounds and song.

  24. colby Avatar

I would kill for Wally Pfister to get this.

    Martin McDonagh.

A TDK sweep would kick ass.

  25. Jonathan Spuij Avatar

IВґm rooting for a tie. In any category, just for fun.

  26. Zak Avatar

I’m going for Slumdog for pretty much everything, but I would love love love for Pfister to get the statue for TDK!!

and how bout a tie for Best Actress, Streep and Winslet

    that’d be something. :)

I’m so pulling for In Bruges in Original Screenplay… I loved Wall.E, and it is a better movie, but In Bruges has an extremly great Screenplay!

    Also Anne Hathaway… She’s Great..

And my personal one Defiance for Score… I know it is probably not the best, but just because of the great movie it is an how the music makes the movie rolls…

I know that there’s no chance in hell any of this happens… but i’m still pulling for then!

  28. Roger Avatar
    Roger

oh and a tie between Sean Penn And Mickey Rourke… I know that never happens in Oscars but that would be a great way to reward two remarcable performances!!!

  29. Zak Avatar

    I agree Roger,

a tie in lead actor and actress would be insane!

  30. Miles Avatar

Thomas Newman NEEDS to win an award this year. He’s deserved it for so long, and Wall-E was a truly exceptional score. I would love to see a Thomas Newman sweep in the Score and Song categories.

Additionally, a Wally Pfister victory would be amazing.

  31. Jeremy Avatar

    Wall-E for Best Original Screenplay.

That’s pretty much the only category that hasn’t been decided where I have a passionate interest. I’d also like to see Anne Hathaway win Best Actress and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button win Best Original Score, but should either lose I won’t be that disappointed.

Just saw THE READER again and it blew me off….

The Kate Winslet really deserves to win tomorrow. She nailed it. Not even Melissa nor Streep can stop her now.

The movie tells a multi-layered, non-linear, morality-bending story, that demands your over-zealous attention for details.

Im glad I saw it again today. Now, I consider Hannah Scmitz as a saint, a true hero of the movie. She willfully casted the burden upon herself of the guilt that should have been equally blamed to all the Germans for the mere fact of letting the holocaust happen. Indeed, its easy to point a finger to another person without being aware that the other four point at you.

    Rourke for Actor.
    In Bruges for Original.
The Dark Knight and WALL-E to take home 2 each.
Iron Man to take home 1.

    Pipe dream is Hathaway.

“Milk” going empty-handed. Why “Benjamin Button” is getting attacked for a few superficial similarities while “Milk”‘s screenplay had not one iota of creative effort or originatilty is beyond me.

  35. Zak Avatar

I have to say, I loved Milk and the screenplay was amazing, as was In Bruges, but I must admit, I’d be really happy and shocked if Wall-E goes home with it!

but for now, I think Dustin Lance Black has got it in the bag

Mr. Pfister ought to win. His revolutionary use of IMAX cams for a feature film deserves to be recognized. What’s going against him is the Slumdog Millionaire tidal wave and the fact that most Academy members probably didn’t see the film in its glorious IMAX format.
