POLL: Who deserves it? — BEST MAKEUP

Tell us in the sidebar poll.  (FYI, any poll that is decided by a margin of 10 votes or less will be posted once again after we’ve run through all the categories, to make pick up any straggler votes that might seal the deal for the winning contender.  So far that is only the case with two categories.)

    No contest – Ben Button.

Button, with Hellboy a close second.

    I agree with N8, Button = 1, HB2 = 2

Hellboy. While the Joker’s make-up is iconic but mostly the same and Button has no clear line between the CGI and the Make-up. I mean wasn’t all the Brad Pitt stuff CG-stuff and had Blanchett not many wrinkles removed and added?
Actually I’m still baffled they got nominated with all the CG they added to the faces, they don’t usually like that don’t they?

Button… sure TDK makeup is inconic, but not nearly as complex as Button, even the stuff that didn’t include CGI.

Spuij: No clear line? How’s this: Blanchett’s makeup is all of it, every bit, prosthetic. That’s enough for the win IMO, but the aging on Button (everything after the boat sequence until he shows up young again) is great as well.

I’d gladly say Hellboy II, what with the makeup replacing the prequel’s CGI with such phenomenal success, but I believe the Academy will go with the most iconic makeup driven performance of the year.

And a month ago, I would be the first to say that was Brad Pitt’s full lifetime represented in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, but the backlash against the film (perhaps powered by the epic success of its main competitor) and the almost unanimous, certainly deserved praise for the sadly departed Heath Ledger is inching this one to The Dark Knight. And truly, while it might be the weakest one of the three, will anyone be outraged or shocked?

Still, I believe the award should deservedly go to Synechdoche, New York.

Blanchett’s make-up is also CGI. Why would they go to such lengths to invent new FX technology for a movie and use it only on one character if they have to actually make 2 characters look young and old(albeit in different directions). I believe dying Cate Blanchet’s hospital make-up is CGI, though I’ll be glad if someone can confirm.

But yep, there is make-up work on both besides the CGI that is definitely good and Oscar worthy.

But taking the copious CGI into account & TDK’s insubstantial Make-up, I’d go for Hellboy(I have just seen the trailers and might never watch the movie) but Button would be a good choice too.

That BBSFX website clearly shows examples of CGI brushes working on Blanchett’s face. That’s why all of it confuses me. Such a strange category. But still Hellboy deserves something more simply because no film looked so rich and colorful this year.
