Best ‘Button’ TV spot of the year…

Written by

…maybe the best TV spot of the year period.  Though it could have been longer.  I’m sure you’ve all seen the commercial featuring Arcade Fire’s “My Body is a Cage,” but in case you haven’t, I’m including it below.

It’s a shame the film came up nil last night.  I spoke to Eric Roth this morning, who’s taking it all in stride.  Of course, he’s been on both sides of the situation, seeing “Forrest Gump” rack up win after win in 1994, only to watch “The Insider” go ignored in category after category five years later.  But as Jared Harris told me last night, the good thing is there will be plenty more opportunities as the season moves along.

wow…now if only they had started out with something like that

That was a fantastic commercial, but doesn’t really fit with the feeling of the movie at all, IMO.

I remember watching that with Heroes and having my jaw drop.

Michael: Funny, I’m just catching up with “Heroes” on DVR now and that’s where I saw it.

I love the song, but it really does not work for the film at all. I mean, yeah the lyrics fit, but the composition does not.

Now that’s the Fincher I fell in love with.

Best film commercial of the year.

Anyone see the one that just has Battlestar-esque drums banging away? Now THAT doesn’t fit.

I saw Richard III performed by a theater company in Providence back in February, and that’s the song the play opened with. Let me tell ya, it was a lot more fitting than it is here. Don’t get me wrong, I love Arcade Fire, but I’ll echo sentiments that it just doesn’t work for this film. I’m kind of lukewarm towards the first part of the spot, but once the full band kicks in, it really is fantastic.

Anyone else see paralells to the Atonement “Apologize” spot? Or am I the only one?

I don’t think the song fits the movie but it made for a damn good commercial.

It makes me want to see the movie again and sure the song doesn’t fit the feel but it does make the movie appealing and hell. That’s what the commercials are all about…misleading to get asses in the seats. Plus it’s easier to look at the commercial after seeing the movie and say the song doesn’t fit but when your in the theater I don’t know if anyone would say, “Hey, this isn’t really like that song played during the commercial.”

I love the song, love the movie, they don’t fit but hey it still looks kinda cool

I’m an Arcade Fire fan and I will watch Benjamin Button as soon as it is released here in Brazil (Jan 16th), but this commercial just isn’t really good.

Now, this is a terrific use of “My Body Is a Cage” in a movie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pyp34v6Lmcc

I get what you’re saying Seany, but from my point of view, as someone in advertising, it’s much more impressive when you can make a commercial with that much umph while still accurately portraying your “product”

Please explain to me how it does not accurately portray the product.

Also, I’m not usually a fan of popular indie music, but I love me some Neon Bible. I find their debut to be quite overrated, but the opener is an amazing song.

How is this the best commercial of the year? Poorly chosen song based on a few lyrics and not tone or feeling cut together with random images. The first theatrical trailer was much, much better.

there is no doubt in my mind that this, along with the theatrical trailer (“life can only be understood backward…”) is the best advertising of the year.

I’m sorry, but I’m with Kris. An extremely epic song put to the trailer of an extremely epic movie. Doesn’t hurt when the lyrics work great with it as well.

is it just me Kris or is your appreciation for this film growing all the time?

For some reason this (awesome) song always makes me think of ROBOCOP. I think it’d be a terrific centerpiece to the trailer of the eventual remake. Anyone have any clue when Arcade Fire is next going to grace us with their presence?
