Things have been relatively nuts this week, and for the rest of the day, I’m preoccupied with other matters. Feel free to use this space to talk about whatever, and I promise to get the round-ups back in order next week, plus a new set of charts and a column on Monday.

I saw three movies this week, and all three were comedies that are far from any Oscar recognition. Still, being a movie nut that only frequents this site for his cinematic fix, I’d still be interested to hear others thoughts on: “Get Smart,” “Zack and Miri…,” or “Role Models.” As a collective, three movies as far in comedic genre as you can get. Individually, movies that rank, respectively, 14th, 24th and 8th on my year’s list (through 36).
Get Smart, which I liked, was a credit to damn good casting, starting with the headliner. The movie is silly and, in places, arcane, but Carell and Arkin do their jobs, and manage to pull out the laughs. Zack and Miri, which I could have done without, seemed like a rather mixed film. One-third of the film was solid humor owed to good chemistry between Rogen and Banks. Another third was a romantic comedy backdrop that didn’t really fit the plot. And another third was Kevin Smith trying to push the limits by just THIS much.
Finally, saw Role Models last night, and I recommend to everyone. Jane Lynch is pretty fantastic, and as I wrote to a friend, the movie is raucous without cheapening itself. Paul Rudd can hold a movie up, and while it takes a while to get into, the movie grows on you. Trust me … this year, we’ll all spend money on much worse films.
Just thought I’d pass on this link about “Tulpan” and “Waltz with Bashir” winning awards:
