…no column this week. Seriously, what’s there to discuss? The expected box office miss for “Body of Lies?” The expected critical approval of “Happy-Go-Lucky” (which makes some strides this week)? But I know people get ancy if the predictions aren’t updated, so I am here to be your savior. Not a lot of shifting and sliding but some notable indications here and there.
A quick note, however, regarding the “up” and “down” arrows you see on the charts each week. It seems a few folks have been confused about their actual meaning, so let me reiterate that here. Just because a contender has an arrow next to his or her name does not mean he or she has positive or negative buzz. The arrows simply indicate that an entry has risen or fallen on the chart since the last update, and a rise or fall can be the result of any number of factors on the chart that might have nothing to do with the contender in question. Keep that in mind.
Here are this week’s updated predictions:

finally a little more dark knight lovin!
Just got through my 25th movie of the year, so while this has little to do with Oscar predictions, here’s my personal top 10 movies in 2008.
1. WALL-E
2. The Dark Knight
3. Tropic Thunder
4. Iron Man
5. Forgetting Sarah Marshall
6. Vicky Christina Barcelona
7. In Bruges
8. The Incredible Hulk
9. The Duchess
10. Hamlet 2
It’s been a rough 2008, with only the first four earning a B+ or better from me. From 8-15 (including Charlie Bartlett, Flash of Genius and Burn After Reading), it’s pretty interchangeable, all B-/C+ efforts. Needless to say, I’m ready to be wowed.
The good news is that I’ve seen only one (TDK) of Kris’ top 10 Best Pic movies, so there’s room for improvement. Blindness, Synecdoche and Changeling will all be added to my list in the next 2 weeks, too.
Uh I think Warner Bros might have something to say about The Weinstein Company controlling The Dark Knight…
Yeah I agree with you Kris…”the expected box office miss of “Body of Lies”,not that I didn’t think that it was a good movie (good but nothing exceptional)in my humble opinion. I just thought all along like other movies dealing with “terrorist subject matter”that people would not flock to the theaters to see it.
Two things, you might want to add Rachel Portman for her score in the Duchess. Unless the cd contains only music that is not used in the film (which I haven’t seen yet) it is a sure contender/
Second, does anyone know how much animated films are in contention this year? Will there be 3 or 5 nominees?
Nice Jamie. :)
Where’s Sally Hawkin’s folk? and Mike Liegh, too many people love the guy to let him fall through the cracks.
McGuff… please tell me you haven’t yet seen “Rachel Getting Married,” cause that’s a sad omission from that list.
Revolutionary Road is based on a novel, not a short story. And speaking of Revolutionary Road – where the heck is Leonardo DiCaprio on your charts? And speaking of leading actors, you have Mickey Rourke in first position? Brave prediction in first – he is never winning best actor. Ever.
Go dark knight go! Expecting to move up from number 10…
I have not, Speaking English. Unfortunately, it’s not showing around me, and while I’ll make the trip for a few instances this fall/winter, like Slumdog Millionaire, I’m afraid I’ll have to wait for Rachel Getting Married to hit stores before I catch Ms. Hathaway. But hey, I liked the girl in a Devil Wears Prada, so I don’t doubt she’s fantastic.
Would be interested to see anybody else’s top 10, BTW, if you’re inane enough to rank the movies you see like I am.
1. In Bruges
2. Vicky Cristina Barcelona
3. The Dark Knight
4. The Bank Job
5. Burn After Reading
6. Tropic Thunder
7. The Visitor
8. Cloverfield
9. Iron Man
10. Stop-Loss
Burma, I just watched The Bank Job, and I rather enjoyed it. I have to say I think I slot it in at 8 on my list, behind In Bruges but in front of Hulk.
P.S., if Robert Duvall is playing Ely in THE ROAD I would put him in at least the top ten prospects for a Best Supporting Actor nod. Not because of the size of the role necessarily but because of who he is, and my sense that they’d like to honor him again as his career winds down. Also he will be the only comic relief or relief of any kind really, and is bound to make a strong impression because of it.
