‘Slumdog’ extraordinaire

Written by

I’d hate to say something cliched like “believe the hype on Danny Boyle’s ‘Slumdog Millionaire.’”  But believe it.  And to think I almost skipped out on tonight’s screening since I caught wind of it last minute…thank God I took the trip because this is a hell of an achievement from start to finish.  And Searchlight, Warners or somebody better figure out a way to market the hell out of that soundtrack like they did “Juno” last year, because it’s THUMPIN’.

Anyway, I don’t want to dig into the review yet.  But Danny Boyle proved himself a visionary yet again this evening.  And Chris Dickens is my new favorite person.  What a treat.

Kris, I’ve never hid the fact that I value your opinion more so than most other writers on the subject of film, and this glowing little tidbit is enough to send me into an overwhelming fit of excitement. November cannot come fast enough.

So glad to hear this. As for the soundtrack, I’ve had the finale number in my Best Song predictions for a little while, based on hearsay — is there something to that?

And there’s also a new MIA track in the mix somewhere, right?

There was an MIA song I haven;t heard before, but I haven’t listened to her entire album yet either. An entire montage is cut to “Paper Planes,” however, and it’s amazing.

As for the closing Bollywood tip of the hat, I could see that. I didn’t consider it when I was watching, though.

I think that the closing song WOULD be nominated, but I vaguely recall Boyle saying at Toronto that it wasn’t an original piece.

Glad to see more and more piling on board this movie, though. Seriously, it almost certainly isn’t the best of the year. But it brings the goddamn house down, every time, everywhere it plays.

I seem to remember reading an interview with Boyle somewhere, where he said that the track MIA contributed was new.

MIA at the Oscars? We can but dream.

    I beg to differ…

I’m with Ryan in that I almost always agree with you in your movie reviews, Kris. I doubt this will be any different.

I am ridiculously excited to see this. Danny Boyle MUST make the top five this year.

Oh man, MIA performing at the Oscars would be above amazing (perhaps bettered only by Girls Aloud performing teehee)

This movie is reminding me of “The Full Monty”‘s great success in 1997, a total audience crowd pleaser which made it to the Oscars.

    @Guy:

Maybe you know more about this than I do, but when is it set to be released in UK?

Chris: I believe the UK release is in January, but I don’t have a specific date.

And for those lucky enough to wrangle tickets, it closes the London Film Festival on 30 October.
