As promised. And it looks absolutely amazing.
Focus Features has just released the trailer for Gus Van Sant’s “Milk,” along with what looks to be the key art work for the film (as opposed to the concept poster that was revealed yesterday).
I’ve been hearing some wonderful things about Sean Penn’s work in the film, and if this two-and-a-half minute glimpse is any indication, he’ll be a busy man this Oscar season.

Can’t wait for this film. Benjamin Button and Milk are the movies I’m most looking forward to that are left in ’08. Great trailer.
Wow, looks brilliant. Penn certainly looks fantastic, and I think it becomes the favorite to win Best Picture. Of course, I thought it was top two before this … I’m not suggesting too much can be gleaned from a trailer.
But yeah, two thumbs up.
I’m still not completely sold on this film’s Best Picture potential but I love Sean Penn’s performance in this one. Could be the best performance of his career – and I don’t think that anyone would dare accuase him of overacting this time.
Well, I’m sold. Best Picture, Director, Actor, and Screenplay are looking pretty good after that trailer. Amazing.
Not that he hasn’t been a safe call before, Penn just locked his fifth nomination. The film, too, looks like a critical darling in the making.
If the trailer is an indicator about the movie this one is LOCKED is so many categories! And the music from ‘The Life Of David Gale” ALWAYS amazing! What a great score that was! Anyway Milk is up for many oscars!

For those like me who couldn’t get the Quicktime working. Looks amazing and could be the frontrunner for the “biopic slot” this year. But a good trailer doesn’t equal a good movie. We’ll see.
The timing for Milk release looks perfect for massive attention. I have a feeling the movie will be the political champion over W, Frost/Nixon, Che and Miracle at St. Anna. Not sure if Penn will win Benicio and Langella.
San Francisco rules!
after Drugstore Cowboy, MOPI, To Die For, Good Will Hunting, Elephant and PP this could be right vehicle for a visionary filmmaker. Maybe James Franco will steal the show to Brolin.
Kris, may I ask what you’ve heard about the film itself, not just the performance?
I’ve only heard limited murmurs and I refuse to believe it.
And what is it that you’ve heard and refuse to believe?
Very, very impressive – I’m a lot more swayed by this trailer than I was by the one for Frost/Nixon.
Hopefully, this could remedy the embarrassing fact that Van Sant’s only Oscar recognition has been for (sigh) Good Will Hunting.
Bryan: To be vague, criticism of the film’s depiction of homosexuality.
Dustin Lance Black has a good agent.
Rob: I’ve heard similar criticism. I WOULD be in on it; homosexuality is wrong (and rather impossible, if you want to be technical), in my eyes.
However…this film looks specatacular. That looks to be a Best Pic nominee next year no doubt. I might just see it, regardless of personal feelings.
Joel, I certainly don’t want anyone who says “homosexuality is wrong” agreeing with any statements of mine, so I wish I could clarify my comments, but I really can’t specify any further.
You may want to see this movie because it looks like it has potential for awards, but maybe when you enter your twenties (though probably not), you’ll realize your ignorance is a slap in the face to everything Harvey Milk lived and worked for.
PHENOMENAL is the word. Awed. Amazed.
Agreed, Mr Gittes — the publicity pushes Black’s name so hard I keep wondering if there’s a reason I should know who he is! Hopefully, this will become the reason.
Joel — you know full well you’re going to upset people with comments like that. Keep it to yourself.
Can you tell me where the other song is from? The one that is not from “The Life of David Gale”, the more dramatic, opera-like choir piece? I loved it and like to hear it seperately.
Not meaning to offend anybody. I think the film looks like a masterpiece. Harvey Milk WAS a great man; fighting for gay rights now (or when Milk was alive) is/was no different than fighting for women’s rights in that time, in my mind Doesn’t make me agree with his beliefs, but I do sympathize. I DO NOT think he should’ve been killed for it; no one deserves to be killed for anything, ever. That’s why I will see the film; those themes are strong ones.
Thanks for that, Joel. I’ve gone from doubting your character to just doubting your intelligence. You think Harvey Milk was a great man and his actions akin to fighting for women’s rights, but you don’t agree with his “beliefs.” Nice. Respectable.
And please don’t feel the need to counterbalance your homophobia by declaring this movie a “masterpiece” based on its trailer.
Love your blog. But try seeing some movies from before you were born before you have the gall to compile a list of “the greatest movies ever made.” That’s right, “The Dark Knight,” “King Kong,” “Minority Report” and “Donnie Darko” all made the list.
If it seems you’ve struck a nerve with me, you have.
Well said Rob.
I can’t add anything more then this was a great trailer I was already looking forward to this film and it looks like it will not disappoint. Penn looks great the story looks artful yet human and funny. Brolin also looks great as White. I cannot wait. And this looks very much a best picture contender to me.

This movie looks soooo great! I was born in the wrong decade: the 1960’s and 1970’s looked so interesting. Also, it’s been driving me crazy, what is the song on the trailer that’s on the TV?
whats the name of that classical song in the trailer?
