I run hot and cold on these guys, but this time they’re spot on. “Elegy” is as bad a film as I’ve seen this year – artificial, self-regarding and devoid of any insight on the sexual and social issues it claims to tackle. Kingsley is uncomfortably arch and mannered, while Cruz is finally defeated by a character whose decisions in the final act negate everything she has built up to then.
Patricia Clarkson is quite brilliant, however, creating the only character in the whole enterprise who resembles a human being. It’s a totally different film when she’s on screen.
I HATED this. Sorry, had to get that off my chest.
