Getting out of hand?

I know I haven’t seen the film yet, and I know it’s IMDb users we’re talking about, but do we really think that “WALL-E” ought to be considered one of the top six films of all time?

It’s got a little under 9,000 votes. Give it some time. It’ll probably settle down to 30-40.

HAHAHAHAHA! Now that is truly hilarious. I don’t think it’s even top-6 of this year. I don’t even think it’s top-6 Pixar. Who are these 9,000 people. Did Arkham Asylum get Internet access or something?

No, what’s getting out of hand is people’s reactions to this… it’s just ridiculous. It’s a meaningless, SUBJECTIVE list on a stupid movie site, why should anyone give a shit? It’s like everyone’s letting this list dictate to them which movies are better than such and such or which movies are the greatest of all time, when it’s nothing more than a silly popularity contest decided by a computer and random, nonsensical votes.

We all have our own opinions, and we don’t need a goofy list to tell us what’s right or wrong. Make your own lists and you can worry about your own rankings then.

I have not seen Wall-E yet but I would not worry too much about the ranking at IMDB. It only has 9000 votes (regular voters are all that are counted at IMDB towards the top 250). As a movie gets more and more votes, it loses ground inevitably and Wall-E will likely wind up more like a typical good animation film from PIXAR and not ahead of Schindler’s List on the top 250.
I bet it has well over 100,000 votes by the time its ranking stabalizes.
I like the top 250 at IMDB because of the variety of films included. The critics are less likely to give recognition to pure entertainment and over-rate obscure little films like The Station Agent. IMDB is not perfect but that top 250 list is about as good as any list I have seen except of course for my own which is the best of all as I am sure yours is as well.

Well it could be if it really is so entertaining.

If any film this year deserves it, it’s Wall-E.

But the IMDB polls are a joke. Wait till the haters see this placement and band together with zeroes.

Kris, just curious – if The Dark Knight reaches the top six 4 days after release, will you think it’s getting out of hand? ;)

Yes. Unless it deserves it. :)

In Bruges has 19,000 votes and an 8.1 which would put it somewhere around #140-160 on the list… yet it’s not. Hmmm.

God how I hate the IMDB list. (I mean, I like The Shawshank Redemption too, but #2… really?)

It will settle down – I remember when The Fellowship of the Ring came out it pretty much entered the chart at (gack) #3. It’s dropped down to the 20s or something, which is still ridiculous, but, like, whatever.

    IMDb is so lame.

    WALL-E is not.

This always happens. Am I the only one who remembers “American Beauty” going back and forth between #1 and #2 on that list from September ’99 to April ’00? When people are almost unanimously digging a movie it spikes up for a while, and then settles into a more reasonable slot. It’ll happen here too.

That said, the movie’s fucking fantastic, and how someone could be enough of a misguided buzzkill to make the statement that it’s not “top-6 Pixar” is beyond me. I don’t want to say it’s Pixar’s best film just yet, but I don’t want to rule it out either.
