  • THE LISTS: Top 10 horror films of all time

It’s Halloween week and since we are a movie site, we are under some kind of unspoken obligation to provide our dear readers with a list to fit the festivities. You may remember a similar list popping up two years ago, in which all current contributors voiced an opinion and the final results represented a collective agreement. Since I was not a contributor at that time, Tapley asked me to offer up a new take this year.

A little backstory on my relationship with scary movies seems appropriate. I was raised by two Christian parents who were very protective of the images that I put into my head. When I was six years old, I was playing at a friend’s house when he suggested we watch “Beetle Juice.” Knowing that it was a potentially objectionable title, I called my mom and asked if it was okay and she said it was not. Kids being kids, we watched it anyway.

What did I think of it? It scared the crap out of me. So much so, that I understood why my mom didn’t want me to watch it and actively avoided scary images on my own free will from then on. When one or two infiltrated me, such as “Ghostbusters,” I was always a little rattled. As I’ve grown, I’ve only become slightly less sensitive to these types of images and only actively seek out scary films if I hear there is a lot more going on to make it worthwhile.

  • The kids are NOT all right (or alright, for that matter)

This post is so unnecessary because it is an obvious lost cause. It really shouldn’t even be enough to get a rise, but in me, it just…does.

You know, once upon a time the MTV Movie Awards (which are voted on publicly) actually seemed to reflect an edge in America’s youth. Think about it. “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” won the MTV award for Best Picture. “Menace II Society” won the MTV award for Best Picture. “Pulp Fiction,” “Seven,” “Scream,” “There’s Something About Mary,” “The Matrix,” “Napoleon Dynamite,” etc.  Room was even made here and there for prestige pics that tapped a pop culture vein.  “A Few Good Men,” for instance, or “Titanic,” “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy and “Gladiator,” one of only two times the award matched the Academy’s choice.

And in the last five years?  Scary.  “Wedding Crashers,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest,” “Transformers” and far and away the two worst films to win a popcorn statue: “Twilight” and “The Twilight Saga: New Moon.” (Why, Bill, why?)  What the hell happened to the MTV audience?  What happened to the kids’ edge?  Who are these people?

  • Michael Jackson made the video star

(from left) Janet Jackson and Michael Jackson in ScreamJames Montgomery of MTV News was just on the network talking Michael Jackson’s legacy and it struck me as particularly applicable for a film site, so I thought I’d pass along his sentiments:

The interesting thing is MTV started at the same time Michael Jackson starting going supernova…If you look at him then becoming huge, “Thriller,” Michael Jackson stopped making videos, started making movies at that point.  These were big budget, big special effects, dance sequences, 10, 12, 13 minute things.  “Bad” is 18 minutes long, Martin Scorsese directs it, Wesley Snipes is in it.  “Black or White,” stuff with the morphing technology he used, he always appreciated the showmanship of like P.T. Barnum and the silver screen era of Hollywood.  That’s what all his videos were.  When Michael Jackson premiered a video, that was an event.  You stayed home to watch that.

“Scream,” as far as I understand, is still, to this day, the most expensive music video ever made.  I think it was budgeted at something like $7 million which today is unheard of and back then was doubly unheard of.  The special effects he laid in, huge event with his sister.  He really got it.  He knew that videos were a way to promote himself and make this brand and make him this international superstar.  We were just lucky to be along for the ride.  It’s pretty amazing.
