We’ve made it to the second round in our mammoth series polling In Contention readers for a list of the most influential films of all time. “Annie Hall,” “Psycho” and “The Wizard of Oz” squeezed past the competition to become our final trio to move on to the next stage. We’re getting very close now, having whittled down the original set of 66 movies to 20, all of which you’ll find listed in the sidebar poll this week.
I’ve decided to shake things up a bit in the second round and give more of a voice to everyone, as I’m sure the consistent picking of five and then three titles has made for more than a few hair-pulling moments. This time, you get to decide on your choice of 10 films from our consolidated 20. In a nutshell: of the 20 films to the left, what are the 10 films you deem the most influential films of all time?
When all is said and done, we’ll have 10 clear victors (which will go on to form our list) and 10 clear honorable mentions. Next week, we’ll take our top 10 and, in the third and final round, have one more poll to determine the ranking order!
If you’re somewhat confused, be sure to read up on the background of this series here. Now…get your votes in!

annoyed already because without wizard of oz there would be no star wars
I think a “most influential (in a good way)” list would whittle this list down considerably…there are so many unfortunate Stars Wars, Jaws, Pulp Fiction, and Matrix knockoffs out there.
Oops, typo: Star Wars, obviously.
Clearly no one who had obviously not seen “Battleship Potemkin” sought it out in order to have an informed opinion this time around. Jeez.
Thank god Toy Story came along to pave the way for Open Season and Shark Tale
I’d like to take a quick look at a bad influence here for a second.
Scary Movie…
Look at the BULLSHIT that movie has spawned!
Chad: Silly. Obviously CGI animation is a standard now, and obviously Toy Story paved the way for that.
Birth of a Nation came out in 1915, not 1925.
I voted for the following:
Citizen Kane
Star Wars
Birth of a Nation
The above three stand above all other movies in terms of influence.
2001
The Godfather
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
Toy Story
Jaws
Battleship Potemkin
The Matrix
Anyone who didn’t vote for “Battleship Potemkin” doesn’t know cinema. Sorry if that sounds harsh, but it’s simply unacceptable in every possible way not to include that film on a list of Most Influential of All Time.
As if it weren’t already offensive enough that “Breathless” missed this list. Ugh.
2001, Annie Hall, Battleship Potemkin, Citizen Kane, Gone with the Wind, Metropolis, Psycho, Pulp Fiction, Star Wars, Toy Story.
I should’ve put “Jaws” instead of “Gone with the Wind”, but for some reason I didn’t notice it.
Still disappointed that there is no other horror title apart from “Psycho” on there. What other genre is as prevalent these days (outside of maybe superhero movies) and what other genre is so keen to borrow from films past as the horror genre? Oh well.
Still not sure who “Snow White” influenced since Disney was pretty much the only game in feature animation town for a very long time.
Please rename this poll – the results are far more skewed to popular films than influential ones…
That doesn’t mean I’m going to rename it. If this is what people think to be the most influential films of all time…well, my hands are tied.
I’m now just hoping Battleship can be a runner-up.
Also, I’m toying with the idea of having the readers offer up the 100 word blurbs that will go along with each entry in the top 10. So if you’d like to participate in that, start thinking of one of the films you’re passionate about and we’ll have a formal announcement about it next week.
Oh god, I would totally write for “Psycho”.
