Get a haircut and get a real job

OK, so this story of Daniel Day-Lewis becoming the first person to receive the freedom of County Wicklow, Ireland, isn’t really of immense interest to anyone outside, perhaps, breathless followers of the Wicklow social scene. (My apologies to those of you reading.)

But this photo of Day-Lewis certainly grabbed my attention, if only because of just how unnervingly normal he looks in it. He’s barely recognisable as the floridly coiffed bohemian dude who rocked up at the Academy Awards last February. I’m hazarding a guess that the cropped hair is for his Jesuit priest role in Scorsese’s “Silence,” but where are the pirate earrings? The oddball Paul Smith tailoring? And we can’t see them, but I’ll bet his shoes even match.

I feel strangely let down. What next, Mickey Rourke in simple black tie? Let your freak flag fly, sir.

What I want to know is…..why the hell hasn’t he been knighted yet?

Except by Helen Mirren with an Oscar, haha.

He looks like a veritable MP. How crazy would that be.

Or is he Irish Irish, I always confuse him and Neeson.

No, he’s from England. Neeson is Irish Irish.

Wait a minute…what exactly IS the “freedom of Wicklow”? That article doesn’t really explain it.

I think its just the the same thing as the ‘key to the city’?

It’s a symbolic honour, Robert. Similar to the “key to the city” thing that I think is more prevalent in the US.

And yeah, Day-Lewis is British born, bred and educated.

Isn’t this the look he has for Nine?

  9. Guy Lodge Avatar

Richard: Nope. Longer hair for “Nine” (which has wrapped anyway).

Thanks for the picture of my favorite actor. It reminds me of Shakespeare’s line about Cleopatra, which I will adapt for DDL. “Age can not wither him nor custom stale his infinite variety.” Translation: still fine at 52.

    I hear that, Evelyn.

Last year was weird. He looked awesome at SAG, but like a doofus at Bafta & Oscar with that short/long hair he presumably had cut for Nine.

Oh Danny boy. It’ll be a long time until we see you with those gorgeous flowing locks circa. first Oscar win again.

Day-Lewis’s hair trajectory should get more coverage imho.

Guy, you fool! That’s Matt Lauer, not Daniel Day-Lewis?

    Wait…what? Really?

Someone asked: Liam Neeson is North Irish which makes him British as well.

  16. Guy Lodge Avatar

Indeed. I was thinking Great Britain (as opposed to the NI-inclusive Britain), but I should have been clearer. English born, bred and educated, then.

Appearance is just appearance, I think you’re putting too much stock in it. I think he looks more handsome this way.

I just watched “A Room with a View” again, he’s soooo good. Yum.
