I figure it’s time for a new poll since everyone has spoken on “Watchmen” by now. Since there’s an interestingly diverse slate of films set to open this weekend, I figured I’d ask the old stand-by: What are you going to see?
I’m strangely looking forward to “Knowing,” more because of Alex Proyas than anything else (which, by the way, finally caught up with that “Dark City” director’s cut I wrote about earlier in the week — MUCH better experience than the theatrical version, I’d say). Then again, “I Love You, Man” is frankly looking like the right antidote lately, while the reviews of “Duplicity” have piqued my interest in Tony Gilroy’s latest.
There are also a couple of limited releases in play this weekend, most notably Steve McQueen’s “Hunger” (which you all know was one of my favorite films of last year when it played the festival circuit). But maybe you’d rather see “Watchmen” again, or something else that’s still kicking around the marketplace. Whatever the case, let us know in the sidebar poll and feel free to expand on your pick in the comments section below. We’ll find out what the masses decided when Chad writes up the weekend’s box office Sunday.

I still have to catch up with “Let the Right One In,” now on DVD, so I’ll probably be renting that rather than going to the theater (where nothing much is interesting me at the moment).
Well on Friday, I’ll be watching the BSG series finale. Saturday I’ll catch up on my Netflix queue.
I’ll probably catch “Duplicity” sometime next week and “I Love You, Man” when it comes out on DVD.
If I hadn’t already seen Hunger, I would be there opening night.
I already saw I Love You, Man and Knowing at screenings and enjoy them both but not enough to see them again in place of Duplicity, so I’ll be giving my money to Owen and Roberts this weekend…oh, and I work at a movie theater (Studio Movie Grill – Copperfield) so I probably won’t be giving any money to anyone, haha.
None of that coming out here this weekend. I do have some mystery screening tonight of “a movie not even released in the US for another 2 months. A spectacular, funny and romantic adventure in a world full of deception”. Does that description ring a bell to anyone?
Oh and Che Part 1 is out so I’ll go and see that ASAP.
Yeah, anyone who hasn’t caught “Hunger” yet should make it their top priority.
Having already seen that, of course, I’m rather looking forward to “Duplicity” this weekend.
broken embraces. i am from spain.
OK, Jack wins.
@Jonathan Spuji
I think you might be watching “The Brothers Bloom,” in which case, lucky you. Intriguing cast, and I really loved Rian Johnson’s first film, “Brick.”
I might catch “Gomorrah” at the local theater if I get enough work done before the weekend. Although to be honest, last week was a really big DVD release week, and thus, there are more than enough movies to keep me occupied at home. I’ve already gone through “Let the Right One In,” “Cadillac Records,” “Role Models,” and “Happy Go Lucky.” (I fucking loved “Let the Right One In,” by the by.)
“Rachel Getting Married” and “Synecdoche, New York” are upcoming. And even though it wasn’t released last week, I still have “Australia” sitting around… all three hours of it.
Yeah, sounds like “Brothers Bloom” to me, Jonathan. Nice enough film, though suffocatingly precious at times. Rachel Weisz is terrific in it.
Friday will be Duplicity and then probably I Love You, Man on Sunday.
I will catch Hunger on IFC In Theater on Demand when it is available (next week I think).
Knowing will probably be a rental…
Still haven’t caught Coraline, The Class, or Two Lovers. My money is on me seeing at least one of them this weekend.
I would love to see “Hunger”, but by god it still hasn’t come to Toronto! What’s the deal?? Ditto “Two Lovers”.
I’m interested in seeing all three new releases at some point, as well “Gomorrah” has been here for a couple weeks, and I should probably check that out as well. Or maybe “Pontypool”. There’s actually a lot of selection right now.
Thanks for the thoughts on what it might be. Brothers Bloom would delight me, particularly since we’re probably also gonna get some say about the promotional posters and the trailer. Neat stuff.
Ebert gave “Knowing” a four-star rating, which I found a little bizarre.
I still haven’t seen “Gran Torino”, and I plan to rectify that this weekend. I’ve heard so many contrasting things about it that I want to see it for myself. Let’s hope for the best.
“Duplicity” is progressively dipping in its reviews. I’ll probably still see it, but reviews are not looking good.
“The Class” and “Gomorrah” are at the top of my list.
It was indeed The Brothers Bloom. Amusing caper film that I feel will reveal so much more on second or third viewing. There’s far more here to grasp in one viewing. Witty screenplay as well.
I’ve also been mildly looking forward to Knowing. It looks at least half decent from the trailer and the buzz isn’t that bad.
Oh and the reception around here for Gran Torino has been unanimously great. 4 star reviews and raves all around.
I Love You, Man looks very funny.
Moon with Sam Rockwell at the local film festival. Julia with Tilda Swinton, too.
Breaking Bad on AMC…best series on television.
Also, going to rewatch Chasing Amy for only the second time.
Tokyo! and maybe Sunshine Cleaning
I want to see “Knowing” purely because of the laugh riot that “Wicker Man” (and “Africa, Brave Africa”) were’
was.*
Sin Nombre, the Sundance winner, opens in LA at only two theaters. Gonna try and catch it over the weekend. Looks incredible.
