Alright, I’m settled in here in Santa Barbara. It’s rainy. Fitting. Anyway, the sidebar poll is certainly dated this week. A moot point altogether, so I thought I’d offer up a list of this morning’s surprises and throw it out to you: which one were you most happy to see?
If something else tickled your fancy, tell us in the comments section below (assuming we’re stable for long enough to keep the comments open…busy day).

The Love for The Reader!
Kate Winslet not splitting votes from herself to take the actual win.
Michael Shannon was so great in Revolutionary Road….
Also, fuck the Academy’s inability to be open-minded.
Richard Jenkins, The Visitor. Wonderful! Almost made up for snubs of Bruce Springsteen, Sally Hawkins and Leo DiC
Brad Pitt.
In Bruges!
The In Bruges nomination was the best surprise in the main 8 categories. Overall, I think the Wanted sound nominations were very worthy. I had completely forgotten how strong the work was until this morning.
Richard Jenkins, but that was not really a surprise. I guess In Bruges.
i love that the academy acknowledged kate winslet in the reader as a lead role, which is clearly was!
that was the only surprise i enjoyed this morning. i thought dev patel was a MUCH better choice than michael shannon! and the dark knight clearly deserved a nom this morning.
Kate Winslett for The Reader rather than Revolutionary Road was a real surprise. As was exclusion of Springsteen from best song (considering only 3 noms in this category). No ‘Gomorra’ in best foreign language film. Brad Pitt? Nothing more than OK. I thought Eastwood might slip in there with ‘Gran Torino’ – glad he didn’t :)
Staton for Best Screenplay (WALL-E), Jenkins for The Visitor, no Best Pic for TDK, and no Best Song for The Wrestler. All make me *very* happy!
Guys
you have the wrong films against original song – it’s two for ‘Slumdog’ and one for ‘Wall-E’
sad sad sad over TDK – not even a nod to Nolan which would have been okay.
happy that Kate is in lead where she belongs, leaving room for PC to take her rightful place at the podium.
happy for the understated performance of Brad Pitt and the brilliance of Michael Shannon after a precursor drought.
The Reader and Michael Shannon love
I am happy that Kate was not nominated for Rev Road, this solidifies Meryl’s Best Actress win for the OSCARS! Go Meryl!
MIA is a Best Original Song nominee! Yay!!
Can’t wait for the musical number this year, which I have almost never said about the Oscars’ production numbers.
Marisa Tomei for Best Supporting Actress. It’s about time the OTHER great performance from The Wrestler got some recognition.
The love for The Reader.
The Original Screenplay nominees.
Slumdog’s 2 song nominations
I love the love for The Reader.
Marisa Tomei makes me happy too.
As do Michael Shannon and Richard Jenkins.

The “Gran Torino” snub, and the two Original Song nominations for “Slumdog Millionaire”, especially the one for M.I.A.
I really never believed that “O Saya” would make the cut. Also, MIA is now both Grammy and Oscar nominee. What a fantastic 2008. Also, being an Indian, I am elated for Resul Pookutty who has been nominated for Sound Mixing, also for Slumdog Millionaire.
Geez this love of Slumdog Millionaire reminds me of the love for Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon many years back. It seems like a huge Tsunami blowing from the east!
TDK, Sally Hawkins, Nolan, not nominated, In Bruges recognition, Di Caprio not nominated.
The Dark Knight could have and probably should have made it. Unfortunately, he was at home WASHING HIS TIGHTS!
I voted other which for me would utter delight at Richard Jenkins getting a Best Actor nomination for The Visitor. I saw the movie a couple of months ago and knew I was watching a top drawer performance, but didn’t think it stood a chance at getting an Oscar nomination. I love it when I’m proved wrong like this! :)
