Back in early September DreamWorks sent out a mailer that was, in my book, the first “For Your Consideration” stab of the season, offering up “How to Train Your Dragon” as a contender in pretty much every category. But the mailer wasn’t an advertisement place at any outlet, so the first “official” FYC ad of the season goes to Disney’s “Alice in Wonderland.”
Dave Karger alerts us to the ad, which is part of the recently revealed full-steam-ahead push for the film across all the categories. A billion dollars gets you a lot of love come awards season.
Being first at anything puts you in a good position when it comes to an Oscar race. Currently, as Karger reminds, voters have screeners of “Animal Kingdom,” “City Island,” “Mother and Child” and “Solitary Man” (though you can add “Please Give,” “Winter’s Bone” and “You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger” to that list, too). Now when they open their trusty trades, they’ll see Helena Bonham Carter’s exaggerated features staring right back at them. Check out the full FYC ad after the jump.

Tom O’Neil must be so excited!
It’ll be a travesty if this nabs a single nomination. It’s just so terrible!
Alice in Wonderland is probably the worst movie I have watched this year. Creation is a close second.
I don’t see this being a contender in the big races, but if the campaign is succesful it could definitely get 4 or 5 tech noms.
I believe a lot in a Globe nom for Johnny Depp though.
Seriously hated every single thing about this movie.
And I had to watch it multiple times for my job so I hate it even more now.
It doesn’t even look good (Cinematography, Art Direction). Burton films at the bare minimum look good but this was just dreck.
Just replace ‘Best’ with ‘Worst,’ and I would be totally behind a Razzie FYC campaign on this steaming pile.
Surprised Depp is being campaigned Lead. I would have thought Lead would be Mia Wasikowska, solely.
I still see lthis getting little more than art direction, costumes, make-up, and effects.
And I maintain that Atwood’s wacky, but gorgeous costumes here are the best movie costumes I’ve seen since Keira Knightley’s green dress in Atonement.
I would actually crap myself if something like… Crispin Glover got a supporting actor nomination. And why is Johnny Depp going lead? I actually think he would have a shot if he went supporting. And original song?!?!?
Depp was definitely not a lead character, but I can see why they would push him as such. Could be interesting to see if he could grab a Golden Globe nomination. Haven’t really taken a look at the comedy contenders this year..
This film is locked for a Costume Design win in my opinion..
Locked nominations will be for Art Direction, Make Up and probably Visual Effects…
The rest, I don’t know… Though this film is entertaining… I will still support it’s campaign for tech noms
The more I think about this film, the less I feel like it has any strength in any of the races. It’s in the running for worst film of the year, in my opinion, and though it probably will get a nomination for Art Direction, I can’t see it doing well anywhere else.
I waited to see this movie until it came out on DVD. Rented it. Worst dollar I’ve ever spent.
Avril Lavigne as an Oscar nominee. Ahahaha
As much as I hated the film, it does have fine Art Direction. Though, there is a lot better work out there.
This is a bit off-topic, but the mention of the first screeners made me wonder: did anybody see City Island? I’ve heard virtually nothing about it on sites like this one, but I saw it during the summer at the local arthouse theater and absolutely loved it. It’s probably my favorite movie of the year thus far, with wonderful writing and a fantastic mix of comedy and poignancy.
Come on, people, it’s not THAT bad.
Although it’s certainly not good.
I do think it looks pretty indelible. Deserves a nomination for art direction, at the very least.
But yeah, dullard of a film. “Worst of the year,” though, no.
if this doesnt win best picture theres no justice in the world
Not a good production, but still counts as a piece of work to remember in terms of art direction as a whole. Make up and costume might bring a nomination.
This movie is AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWFUL.
It could conceivably get one or two nominations, but I sure hope it doesn’t.
I hope the Razzie people have the good taste to eviscerate it with their awards ceremony.
Wow, I enjoyed ‘Alice in Wonderland’. Is it quality cinema? Hell, no. But yes … I found it wacky, & entertaining. The full theater I saw it with absolutely ate it up, too. I don’t understand the widespread internet disdain.
Loved this movie and hope it nabs some craft nominations but it shouldn’t even run for Best Picture…. Crispin Glover for Supporting Actor? Christ that was a bad role
I mean, I can’t honestly call it the “worst” movie of the year – there’s a lot more incompetent, wretched messes that came out… but I can’t say I hated anything more than this so far this year.
I think the only nomination this film would be worth it is Best Supporting Actress for Helena Boham-Carter, she was magnificent.
Best picture? jajajaaaaaaaaa
hahahahahahahahahahaha
no
FYC on all categories (or almost all)…. that’s hilarious!! jajaj
This is crazy! What next? Saturday Night Live doing FYC ads for MacGruber?
