Del Toro, Cameron to take on Lovecraft’s ‘Madness’

At Comic-Con, director Guillermo Del Toro announced that one of his next projects would be a remake of Disney’s “The Haunted Mansion.” Del Toro would be co-writing and producing, though, not directing (and boy did that news get a split reaction from movie-goers).  He said his next directorial gig would be announced shortly, and today, we get the answer.

Mike Fleming reports at Deadline.com that the “Pan’s Labyrinth” helmer will be a 3D adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s “At the Mountains of Madness,” a project he’s been circling since he set it up at DreamWorks in 2004.  Now Universal has stepped in to breathe life into the film once more.  But that ain’t the half of it.

As mentioned, it’ll be a 3D film.  With that in mind, James Cameron has come aboard as producer, making this instantly an event film to anticipate, given the scope of Cameron’s 2009 3D ground-breaker “Avatar.” I still think one or two event films along these lines every year would have more impact than blindly converting various 2D titles and muddying the waters of potential for 3D filmed entertainment.

Writes Fleming:

The film will be a big ticket item, shot in 3D, where Cameron’s expertise can really help. Cameron has said he won’t put his name on many future movies outside of the 3D reboot of Fantastic Voyage at Fox, but I’ve heard he’s making an exception for del Toro. Cameron’s presence helped win over the studio. I’m told the film will begin pre-production in the next few weeks, and shoot next summer.

In the Lovecraft tale, a gruesome discovery made during a scientific expedition to the South Pole in the 1930s hints at the true origin of mankind having come from elder gods from another planet. Bad things happen when those life forms are awakened.

Del Toro was also at Comic-Con with “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark,” which he is producing.  He’s off and running as of late.

I wholeheartedly agree. Leave 3D to people who know how to use it and don’t overwhelm the marketplace with cheap conversions.

That said, I think Del Toro is a severly overrated filmmaker.

The plot sounds perfect for Del Toro. It immediately reminded me of Hellboy and Pan’s Labyrinth.

I’m not a big fan of Del Toro, but Lovecraft seems like the perfect material for him.

Very excited to hear that this is finally coming to fruition. I highly recommend this book. It is a bizarre, disturbing work of sci-fi horror. If adapted successfully, this will be a lot better than Pan’s Labyrinth.

Ha. I remember having a short back-and-forth the other day about “Mountains” when the “Haunted Mansion” news broke. Guess GDT was setting us up for this announcement.

ATMOM is the guys dream project from everything I’ve heard.

You know, I remember that one of my first thoughts after seeing Avatar was “Man, I can’t wait to see what Guillermo del Toro does with this technology.” Because, while I give major kudos to Cameron for the creation and execution of it all, I find his storytelling a bit thin. I’m hoping that del Toro’s vision, tight storytelling, and humor will really make it shine. I think this very well may be that project. Can’t wait.

The prospect of Del Toro and Cameron working on a Lovecraft tale excites me more than Spielberg and Jackson to be honest.
