Kris is too smart to go there but, undeterred by my less-than-stellar Globes showing, I will.
Principally, I admit, because I feel like going on record with my odd conviction that “The Messenger” will claim four nods. This is the film’s moment to pounce, I think.
My biggest wish for the morning? For an unexpected (and deserving) name to crop up in that still-wild final Best Actress spot. (Sidebar: does the Best Stunt Ensemble award still exist? Why is no one predicting it?)
What are the crazy voices in your head telling you? My guesses after the cut.

I can see The Messenger scoring here, too. It gives me this The Station Agent-type of vibe.
In other news, Guy, I’m currently watching Julia right now. Only 22 minutes in, and loving ~ Swinton already.
Good man.
The lack of recognition for such an obviously towering performance is almost funny. Almost.
I agree Swinton was great in Julia but the movie itself was so bad!
Julia is not a bad film.
Guy, exactly. It would have been really funny if it wasn’t so sad. I have to say that I liked the movie and not just the performance though they’re certainly not equally good.
I guess the consunsus didn’t leave you much of a choice. Especially for best actress. You did however let yourself free in some cases. I haven’t seen Nine and I love Dench but from what I hear Cotillard is the best in the movie so i would rather see her than Dench. Afterall, they even nomonated her for the Shipping News and they gave her the award for Chocolat. Too much love hurts :p
Snubbing Precious for Best Ensemble? Guy, I know you’re not a fan, but be objective! :) the acting was great all the way. Not one weak performance.
I just wish Marion gets nominated somewhere. In the Supporting Actress, if possible: to insist on what the BFCA tried to do!
and yes, I know: Marion WILL get a nomination; as a part of the ensemble. :)
Alex, please, I don’t want to see the obvious once again. I already have it in my brain. He felt strongly about the Messenger and he had to leave one out.
Alex: I am being objective — quite possibly wrong, but objective just the same. “Precious” struck me as the most vulnerable of the obvious frontrunners, so I left it out to accommodate my “Messenger” hunch.
I mean, do you really think these would be my subjective choices? ;)
tilda should be winning anything something in my drug induced haze is saying nominations for laurent and cornish

i meant to say tilda should be winning everything
strangely, I feel Inglourious more vulnerable for Ensemble than Precious…
Ha! So much for THAT idea.
Too much love for The Messenger in your predictions but overall you kinda matched most of them!
Guy, what did you think of Humpday? I recall you talking about it. I just finished it, and I am not quite sure what to make of it.
I generally like it — the first half is a riot, and it’s refreshingly gentle and compassionate for a bro-com. I love Alycia Delmore’s performance.
But I still think it loses its nerve in the final act. My review is here.
Would it be totally shocking if Tilda were to still get a Best Actress Oscar nod?
Yep, it’d be pretty shocking. The NSFC is the only precursor left that could come through for her. (She’s not eligible for a BAFTA — she was last year, and they were also napping.)
But hey, never say never.
