Supporting actor is where old-men-who-are-gonna-die-soon go to win Oscars. Isn’t that universally known?

–Glenn in our discussion following Helen Mirren’s Rome fest victory.

LOL…does that mean Christopher Plummer is the front runner?

So the lead actor race which features Freeman and Holbrook means what? At least they were able to move Plummer over to supporting.

A funny quip, but not entirely true. I would change it to “Supporting Actor is where old-men-who-are-gonna-die-soon go to be nominated for and *maybe* win Oscars if there’s no clear frontrunner.” There are plenty of “Quick, before they die!” nominations, but wins are relatively hard to come by. For many, the dominant attitude for “veteran” actors is that the nomination IS the reward.

@Robert Hamer: Yeah, I’d add that “where the clear frontrunner is a scary mega-villain”.

Robert, I never said they actually DO win, but if you’re an old coot you got a better chance of it here than in lead. The joke has always been that supporting actor goes to people like Jack Palance while supporting actor goes to people like Mira Sorvino.

But, seriously guys, it was a joke.

What happens is if you look at the supporting actors who are generally winning or being nominated for best supporting actor(s) they usually were once big stars in hollywood who used to always be the lead. As the years go by and they get older they are reduced to supporting roles, like being a characters grandpa or a source of wisdom. These sort of roles are almost always supporting and are often times charismatic roles. When you combine the fact that the Academy will want to honor these actors at least one last time which is sometimes easy and the obvious thing to do, and the fact that these roles are flashy- the result will be “Supporting actor is where old-men-who-are-gonna-die-soon go to win Oscars. Isn’t that universally known?”

Morgan Freeman cannot die. He is the voice of God to me.

Then Christopher Plummer is the frontrunner by this logic, which is more often than not pretty accurate.

Oh I got the joke and there’s definitely some truth to it; my only point was that there were some asterisks involved in the observation.

  13. Glenn Avatar

Thank you, Kris! M Harris add Jack Palance and James Coburn. And while they’re still very much with us, Martin Landau, Alan Arkin and Gene Hackman weren’t exactly spring chickens when they won.

Asterisks. For was was, mostly, a joke.

I know women have more impressive achievements mostly when it comes to youth with the Academy, but men are more impressive when it comes to nominated old men. So old men like old men & young women. Shocker.

Oldest lead acting winners: 9 men 55+; 4 women 55+ (Katharine is one of the 4 and won thrice after that age.)
9 sup actor winners are 70+, 9 sup actress winners are 60+.
The youngest lead actor winner was less than a month away from 30; at least 10 lead actress winners are 26 or younger. 9 of the 10 youngest supporting winners are women.

    Oh wait that’s 5 women 55+.

I looked it up; 27 women (one third) of all lead actress winners are younger than the youngest lead actor winner.

i DON’T CARE, the academy is a group of old twink members who like to vote for their friends (friends with same AGE, that’ swhy old people win so many times) and small beauti young ladies because they turn them on………………… everybody knows that. what a shame of Hollywood

  23. Glenn Avatar

Wait, isn’t that what you were saying they DON’T do by using examples of Del Toro and Bardem and Gooding Jr and Robbins?

btw “old twink”? That’s… er… okay.

If someone said Leading Actor is where actors playing gays go to win oscars, that would be considered homophobia. I think it’s perfect normal old actors winning oscars. Actors are not models or athletes.
