Am I the only one unimpressed with mo-cap? The only film using that technology that still holds my interest is Avatar, everything else just looks incredibly boring. No matter how good they make the animation, the eyes are always dead compared to live-action…

some of the animation (the ghost in the beginning) looks awful
AmericanRequiem
looks somewhat terrible, what the hell

Mediocre. Not suitable for adults. I hope I’m wrong.

It looks like the animation you find in video games. I’m kind of pissed. I was really excited for this until I watched that trailer. Monster House looked much better.

Does everyone realize there is no difference between this film and Avatar technology-wise. Both use mo-cap performances to achieve photo-realistic effect. Avatar is slightly more successful at photo-realism as it has loads more money to spend and a better technical team.
So if Avatar did not have live-action sequences, it would be considered a straight-up animated movie and would probably be competing with Up.

red_wine, mo-cap is not animation. To call that animation is an insult to animator’s. I’m not judging mo-cap, just stating a fact. Animation means to make something inanimate come to life. It can be drawings, clay figures, or computer characters. But glazing over live human action with computer special effects is not animation. Therefore no mo-cap animated film, no matter how good it is, should ever be eligible to compete in the animated film category.

ooooooh…. Jester…. I think you just called Banky a “tracer”!!!

Jester: I know they are not the same but its up to the academy to decide. And even in mo-cap, only the characters’ movements are not animated(not done by the animators but captured through mo-cap), the character themselves, the entire environments and all the non-human characters/creatures are created in the computer and are animated. So there’s a good enough chunk to make a case for a animation nomination.
Personally I’d give them the nomination. Mo-cap takes away only about 10-20% off the animators burden, the rest is still completely their imagination.

robert zemekis hasnt done anything good for a while and this just shows it
Well. Apparently I’m once again the only one impressed by something on these comment threads. Huh. I just think the film looks beautiful. Seeing it opening day.

I think that looked awful. I hated the animation, and I hated the design. And I though Jim Carey’s vocal performance was strange.
I miss the (real) animated cartoon!

I don’t think it looks awful at all… Based on the trailer, I really like how it looks as an animation and I like Carrey’s vocal performance. And as far as the Oscars go, I think this film can be a potential nominee in both sound categories, original score and even the animated feature category…

I agree with the minority here in saying it looks fine. I’m very curious about this. That said, I’m surprised that with a pretty talented voice cast we heard ONLY Jim Carrey. Obviously he plays the lead(s), but too much Carrey can be too much of a good thing (remember a Series of Unfortunate Events?).
Still, it looks prettier, funnier, and less sugarcoated than the Polar Express, so Im curious.
