Quentin Tarantino’s top 20 films to be released since he became a filmmaker

I’m almost ready to give him a big hug for having the balls to put “Speed” on this list. He’s dead-on about the fact that it’s somewhat taken for granted now. It also cracks me up that he says “M. Night Shama-lama-ding-dong. No idea why.  It’s an old joke, of course, but somehow funny from a colleague.

“Battle Royale” gets Tarantino’s top spot. The full alphabetical list after the jump.  Can you guess which one will actually be on my best of the decade list later this year?

(I’m not sure when this was recorded, but it first crossed my path today when I saw it at Hollywood Elsewhere.)

“Anything Else?” (Woody Allen, 2003)
“Audition” (Takashi Miike, 1999)
“Battle Royale” (Kinji Fukasaku, 2000)
“The Blade” (Tsui Hark, 1995)
“Boogie Nights” (Paul Thomas Anderson, 1997)
“Dazed and Confused” (Richard Linklater, 1993)
“Dogville” (Lars von Trier, 2003)
“Fight Club” (David Fincher, 1999)
“Friday” (F. Gary Gray, 1995)
“The Host” (Bong Joon-ho, 2006)
“The Insider” (Michael Mann, 1999)
“Joint Security Area” (Park Chan-wook, 2000)
“Lost in Translation” (Sophia Coppola, 2003)
“The Matrix” (Andy Wachowski, Larry Wachowski, 1999)
“Memories of Murder” (Bong Joon-ho, 2003)
“Supercop” (Stanley Tong, 1992)
“Shaun of the Dead” (Edgar Wright, 2004)
“Speed” (Jan De Bont, 1994)
“Team America: World Police” (Trey Parker, 2004)
“Unbreakable” (M/ Night Shyamalan, 2000)

What a fascinating list, to go from Lars von Trier to Team America.

He may not be a very good filmmaker anymore, but damn if he isn’t interesting to listen to. I was surprised he resisted the temptation to name his own films.

I’m most amazed that he listed Woody Allen’s worst movie of the decade on there.

I’m still one of the few to consider “Anything Else” as one of Allen’s best from this decade. Can’t believe I agree with Tarantino of all people on this. “Scoop” is Allen’s worst movie of his career.

This is the Tarantino I enjoy. The cinephile-critic one. Not so much the filmmaker.

  6. James D. Avatar

You know, Kris is probably the In Contention writer I disagree with most on movie preferences, but damn if I am not anxiously awaiting his list.

Bill: Yes but not “best of the decade” fan.

Oh I guess THE INSIDER is 1999, so it’s not this decade…

    I’m thinking it’s “Dogville”.

Good lord, that’s like a list some douche on IMDB would crap out.

I’m guessing this was filmed like 2 years ago when Death Proof came out seeing as there’s all that footage from it going on under Tarantino.

If you chose Shaun of the Dead, you’d be my hero.

JSA and Memories of Murder are frickin’ knockouts and Memories of Murder’s final shot will haunt me forever. I always felt that Memories or Murder was a better film than the Host and that JSA is just as strong as Oldboy if not better.

I must be the only person on this planet who despised Dogville, and yet I have a horrible feeling that it will be the one that shows up on Kris’s list.

Having said that, this is an interesting and eclectic lineup of films. Hopefully Tarantino will find his way again.

Maybe a bit imdbish, but coming from a “distinguished” director, it is kind of refreshing.

  18. Glenn Avatar

Why is it IMDb-ish? Because he actually admits that a movie like “Speed” or “The Matrix” can appear on best of lists?

In regards to Kris’ list, the one correlation has got to be wither “Dogville” or “Unbreakable”. The former will definitely be on mine.

The list is from 2009, right? He says it’s his favourite films in the 17 years since he started directing movies in 1992.

    Also, it’s Sofia Coppola.

I love this list, because he’s obviously made it for himself and nobody else. Nothing seems tokenistically included to buff up his cred, and it reflects his personality absolutely.

As for Kris’s match, surely it has to be “Dogville.”

I’m betting Kris’s match is “Dogville” as well.

I like Tarantino’s list. It’s especially refreshing to see nothing that was so obviously placed there just to make him look more like a snob. I’m definitely liking the fact that “Boogie Nights,” “Speed,” “The Matrix,” and “Fight Club” are in there.

The only movie from Tarantinos list that would be in my “best of the decade”-Top 10 would surely be “Lost in Translation”.
I miss “In the mood for love”.

@Dominik: “In the Mood for Love” would top all the films on Tarantino’s list for me, but it’s a fascinating list nonetheless. “Team America” and “Unbreakable”; balls indeed. Btw Kris, any reason Bong Joon-Ho’s name is inverted between his two entries? (incidentally the only director to appear twice on Mr.Tarantino’s list).

Team Ameica World Police = Deal Breaker that movie should be held up as the nadir of Parker and Stone’s career. Just an awful awful movie.

finnaly Dogville is getting kudos for what it is: genius. probably the best film about human behavior ever made.

“Tarantino has become an embarrassment: his virtuosity as a maker of images has been overwhelmed by his inanity as an idiot de la cinémathèque” — from David Denby ‘s(New Yorker) Inglourious Basterds review.

I’m glad someone of Denby’s stature is saying it now. Maybe Tarantino will heed the criticism, take 7 years off and start making good films again.

Team America is great… love the list because it seems like these are movies Tarantino truly enjoys, not just movies he lists to impress others.

Given how much Tarantino loves Asian cinema, it shouldn’t be that surprising that his list will contain many Asian films, in particular Korean ones here. It’s a bit of a surprise though, seeing his name has often been used to boost Hong Kong film (Quentin Tarantino presents, e.g. Zhang Yimou’s “Hero”, anyone?!), but not a single recent HK films made the cut.

Saw “Joint Security Area” a few years back, it’s a sleek thriller with heavy political statements. Underrated, because the film’s director goes on to make much more popular “Old Boy” and “Sympathy with a Vengeance”.

I would put Unbreakable on my list. Team America is a really funny and inventive film.
    NO Dark Knight?

I love that “Friday” made his list, it’s a personal favorite of mine (don’t know if I’d have it on my top 20 list though). “Unbreakable” is a fantastic film and it’s better than both “The Sixth Sense” and “Signs”, and “Dogville” is a masterpiece, plain and simple. Even as my excitement for “Inglorious Basterds” whithers, I can’t help but love this guy, he’s a certified nut but he loves movies with an unmistakable passion and for that reason I remain a fan.

Nope, Roger Ebert declared it the fourth worst film of 2004.

    Von Trier sucks.

Oh and David Ansen of Newsweek ranked it fifth worst.

  40. Chad Hartigan Avatar

Great list. Really original and I just wish he had dedicated a bit more time to explaining the reasons for each selection.

  41. Colin Avatar

@Nauval Y.: Hero is not a Hong Kong film, it’s a mainland Chinese one.

  42. Chad Hartigan Avatar

I don’t share his enthusiasm for Asian cinema but I’m a big fan of all of his English language choices outside of the obviously awful Anything Else and the does-nothing-for-me Matrix.

  43. Marvin Avatar

Dogville is in my top 20 from this decade and The Insider is not only Michael Mann’s masterpiece but one of the best films ever. I also like Unbreakable a lot, though it’s been years since I saw it.

“Anything Else” is a movie I’ve recommended to many people. What’s not to like?

  45. slime Avatar

Chad Hartigan you are a dumbass so you don’t like all Asian cinema which encompasses japanese, korean, chinese etc and infinite different genres just because they’re an “asian” movie. Is that what your saying because if that is you should seriously never be allowed to watch cinema again.
