Kris already drew your attention to today’s Emmy nominations, and since we don’t really do TV here at InContention — and since the Emmys are quite possibly the most eternally frustrating of all major showbiz awards — we won’t go into a detailed bitching session about how the voters cocked this or that up. Anyway, there were pleasant surprises to be had: “The Flight of the Conchords!” Sarah Silverman! Hope Davis!
Kris highlighted Denis Leary as his pet snub of the morning, but I can’t be the only one baffled that, amid the 16 well-deserved nominations for the best show on TV, there was no room for its standout performer of the season. Hell, make that the standout performer of the season. January Jones, we salute you.

I believe Lost needed more acting noms, and 30 Rock needed more guest spot noms.
And Bret should have been nominated as well as Jemaine.
Most eternally frustrating? Surely we can all agree that the Grammys are the most irrelevant awards on planet Earth.
Not nominated Denis Leary (Tommy Gavin is the best character on Television today) and January Jones is inexcusable. As well, the lack of love for Friday Night Lights and Battlestar Galactica’s masterfully final season is baffling.
Love, love, love the show Guy, and trust me, I’ll welcome any excuse to have you throw up a picture of January Jones. But, I must say, she’s not the acting revelation for me that she seems to be for you. I can’t really explain it, but maybe transparent is the word I’m thinking of. Still, stunning.
All the noms for 30 Rocks and Breaking Bad are well, well deserved, best 2 shows on TV, Lost is up there, but just below them in my mind.
Also last season of Big Love was fantastic!
Agree with you Chad, the Grammy’s are the worst.
Elisabeth Moss had the stand out season last year. I’m still not sure what all the January Jones fascination is about. Her acting just seems too calculated for me. I’m glad they had the good sense to nominate Moss’s portrayal of Peggy.
FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS snubbed again!!!!!!!!! Seriously the best show on TV, and it never gets the recognition it deserves.
Glad for Lost, Big Love – yes, a great season – Breaking Bad (always great), How I Met Your Mother (love that show) and Family Guy (really funny and really smart).
Get rid of House please, this was one of its weakest seasons….! And Entorage just isn’t what it used to be….
The Good:
-Jim Parsons snagged a nom for “Big Bang Theory” (without him this show would be pointless)
-Big Love up for Best Drama (FINALLY!!!!!!!!)
-30 Rock got some noms for its supporting players
-Flight of the Conchords!? WOOHOO!
The Bad:
-Where are the noms for BSG, True Blood, and Pushing Daisies? (I can’t comment on FNL, I don’t watch but have been meaning to rent the DVDs)
-Entourage up for Best Comedy? I like the show, but this was it’s worst season yet…
-As already mentioned, where are the acting noms for Lost? At the very least, Elizabeth Mitchell (aka Juliet) deserved SOMETHING.
The Ugly:
-Family Guy for best comedy? This was its worst season yet, and only had one or two episodes that were remotely mediocre. It pains me that this got a nomination over The Simpsons or even American Dad.
-Big Love is up for Best Drama…and that’s it. According to the press release it’s only got one nom. ARE YOU KIDDING ME!? Where are the writing/directing noms? AND WHY WILL NOBODY NOMINATE THE LADIES THAT CARRY THE SHOW!?
I could probably go on and on about who deserved what, but I’m gonna limit myself. Overall, I’d say that (based on its horrible track record), Emmy voters actually did OK this year.
I agree that Elisabeth Moss deserved her nomination. I think she should have been nominated for the first season as well. Such a great role. Maybe it’s the face that Betty Draper is just not as likable, but I’m not complaining that she wasn’t nominated. Christina Hendricks should have also been nommed as well as Vincent Kartheiser. He was much better than John Slattery and showed more range.
I’ve tried to watch How I Met Your Mother, but it is just not for me. Big Bang Theory is a much more worthy show in my opinion, and I’m rooting for Jim Parsons all the way, even though I don’t think he has a big chance of winning.
Chad: Agreed, the Grammys are totally irrelevant. And therefore more amusing than frustrating.
McGuff and Alex: Love Elisabeth Moss’s work on the show too, and the recognition for her is well-deserved. But Jones, for me, achieves the tricky balance of finding a person within an archetype. In a way, I agree with the “transparency” comment, but I think that’s calculated.
And yeah, she is the hottest woman on TV. (Anyone else see her recent shoot for British GQ? Wow.)
I dunno…I find Hendricks to be significantly “hotter” than Jones…which is not to say that the latter’s not attractive…particularly in that Season 1 Coke ad ep, where she evoked Grace Kelly big time.
Re: the Drama and Comedy series noms, I’d say the only baffling one is Family Guy…but it obviously has its supporters.
Elizabeth Moss had THE SCENE in the finale. Most of January’s work was so subtle and powerful, she lacked a scene like that, and to Emmy voters, it cost her. Ridiculous.
I love “Mad Men,” but four writing noms is a little much. There should be a two nom cut off. Would’ve been nice for “All Ye Saints” from Big Love to get a writing nom, probably the best TV script of the season.
While it’s admittedly rather silly to pit Jones and Moss against each other, I do think that if they were only going to nominate one lead actress, then they made the right choice.
“I love “Mad Men,” but four writing noms is a little much.”
Yeah, this used to happen with The Sopranos all the time (and yet, in many cases, it STILL didn’t win Outstanding Drama, on account of its coarse content).
I didn’t see Season 2 of Mad Men when it originally aired but, as with Season 1, I bought the Blu-ray. Only watched the first two eps on Tuesday. I enjoy the series…it’s a classy coctail of a program…a cool, smart retro soap…but I wouldn’t say it has a strong emotional effect on me, which is why I don’t plow through the episodes on DVD/Blu-ray as I might with other programs.
That said, I don’t have any issues with it winning awards, but it wouldn’t necessarily rank amongst my all-time faves…I’m just not that attached to it. Dealing in facades and false identities probably generates some level of detachment in the viewer, I suppose.
(The last post was me…typed “JC” in the name field by accident.”
Agreed – the grammys are rediculous, but Guy the emmys aren’t that bad. They are at least one of the few awards where the voters actually watch the work of the nominees. That is why there are so many surprises at the emmys and why the same people often win year after year – that person is often the best in that category. I’ve read interviews with previous judges who have admitted that they changed their vote after watching the submitted episodes. I’ve seen more deserved winners from these awards than any other.
Glad Mad Men got its nominations, and really happy that Lost got some recognition, though I believe it deserved more. Annoyed that Friday Night Lights missed out on nominations again. Seriously that show is one of the best on right now.
I agree the biggest travesty this year is the the nomination of ‘Family Guy’ for Comedy Series. The show is just ridiculously awful.
The Dude,
‘The Simpsons’ and ‘American Dad’ couldn’t have been nominated for best Comedy Series because they weren’t eligible. Both show’s creators placed them in the Animated Series category instead of Comedy Series. Every show can only be placed in one category (if you notice, Family Guy did not reap an Animated Series nom). It really is a joke. Even in its heyday ‘The Simpons’ tried for a Best Comedy Series nomination and failed. Blah.
Best Nomination – Sigourney Weaver in “Prayers for Bobby” Do yourself a favor and watch it the next time it comes on Lifetime. If it had been released in the theaters she would have probably won an Oscar. Outstanding Performance!!!!
I don’t watch Mad Men. I tried once, but I just didn’t care at all. There’s probably something wrong with me.
The most heinous snubs are nothing for Friday Night Lights (if it goes the way of The Wire, I will kills someone (in my imagination)), and nothing for the acting in “Generation Kill” which was truly excellent.
I agree with you, Guy. January Jones is superb in Mad Men and her snub is awful, especially considering the other nominees in that category.
tim,
Thanks for the clarification, I assumed that the animation rules were similar to the Oscars. Still hurts that Family Guy got a nomination in Best Comedy before The Simpsons did.
I still need to see this past season of Mad Men so I can’t really comment on the heinousness of snubbing Ms. Jones.
But while there are lots to complain about with the Emmys (Nothing major for Battlestar Galactica and Pushing Daisies?!), I was still fairly happy with a few things like How I Met Your Mother finally getting nominated and NPH and Jim Parsons as well.
And as much as I *do* like (more than like) 30 Rock and Mad Men, did they really need to take 8 out of 10 writing nominations? That’s beyond ridiculous.
Oh and Lost should’ve gotten like 20 more nominations. It’s THAT good, people.
