Listen to Tim McGraw and Gwyneth Paltrow’s ‘Me and Tennessee’ from ‘Country Strong’

Continuing this week with a last push to feature a few more Best Original Song contenders we have the featured track from “Country Strong,” namely the Tim McGraw/Gwyneth Paltrow duet “Me and Tennessee.”

If you ask me, this is an absolutely killer tune.  So no surprise it was written by Paltrow’s husband, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin.  Even being a country track, one can hear Martin’s influence in the fabric of the song and it just rolls.  I love it.  (And you’ll recall Paltrow’s big country coming out party on the CMAs last month.)

The film being a musical, one would have expected it to be performed on screen.  The Cher/Diane Warren ballad “You Haven’t Seen the Last of Me” from “Burlesque” is in that kind of position to capitalize on the voting procedure, whereby all contenders are viewed in the context of the given films.  But it’s actually the closing credits cue.  Bummer.

There is one other song from the film being submitted, “Coming Home.”  That one is performed on screen, but we won’t get around to featuring it before we put a bow on the Best Original Song analysis with tomorrow’s Tech Support column.  The album has been available for a month or so, however, so you can pick it up and give it a spin yourself.

Have a listen to “Me and Tennessee” below, and as always, keep track of the Best Original Song race as it unfolds via its dedicated page here.

They both sound great. You might be underestimating Gwyneth’s chances for a Best Actress nomination: doing weird, unexpected things (like dropping 20 pounds to look like a ballet dancer, or convincingly passing your WASPy self off as a country singer) can tip the balance.

I generally think of most country singers as WASPy. But I get your point.

I absolutely love it, your right you can clearly hear Martin’s touch in the song.

I don’t think it helps mentioning that Chris Martin wrote the song. Too many tropes – feels inauthentic coming from Chris Martin.

Might just be my own personal, irrational gripe.

This song sounds like something it’s not trying to be.
