BOX OFFICE: ‘Money,’ baby

Dropped some dollars on “Devil” Friday night. I didn’t hate it. That’s at least going in the right direction, right?

Saw Wall Street. They had a great movie going in the first 20 minutes, then it took a leap in front of a train, the the train wreck strated. And the ending, not since Sander’s cheif took back his wife in Spanlish, I mean wow!

I saw Buried. Good concept. Good camera direction. Terrible script. Worst score of the year.

Saw Easy A, Emma Stone was fantastic. Deserves at least a GG nom. Stanley Tucci, Patricia Clarkson, and Thomas Haden Church also stellar support. Creaky plot points, the whole gay friend subplot left a bad aftertaste and was unsatisfying, first time I hated a Lisa Kudrow performance Plenty of fun though, and you gotta give it cred for some pretty witty humor that doesn’t insult the viewers intelligence.

Shame about Legend of the Guardians. It’s leaps and bounds ahead of bloody Despicable Me in every single way. Got script problems sure, but probably the best technical animation I’ve seen since WALL-E.

Easy A was great. The theater was nearly full, everyone was laughing throughout, and people clapped at the end. I would have liked to see more character development of the supporting characters. Emma Stone was great. The ending spun out of control. However, the plot was well-executed, the relationships believable, and the emotional points really resonant. However, do NOT take anyone under the age of 14 or 15. Some scenes made people drop their jaws and squirm uncomfortably in their seats.

Saw It’s Kind of a Funny Story.

One of the biggest disappointments of 2010. Boden and Flack made a near masterpiece in Half Nelson and while I wasn’t as crazy about Sugar, many critics were. And then this twee hipster piece of shit came along and ruined everything. It’s as if someone took 500 Days of Summer and Cuckoo’s Nest, removed everything that worked, blended it, and then cranked it up to an 11.

Awful awful film all around. A nonsensical series of events, bad casting (was Justin Long busy?), irritating camera and editing tricks, one of the year’s worst films.

I also saw Waiting for Superman.

It’s good enough I guess and timely and an important subject. I just felt it lacked focus, a call to action, and was also too slickly produced. And for a film that fetishizes the plight of black and hispanic students in the US, I think the kids themselves needed more camera time. Less Michael Moore type insertions of silly stock footage and more looks at the day to day lives of these kids.

I had a fairly busy weekend, saw Howl on VOD and Buried, Legend of the Guardians, and Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps in theatres. Howl is not for everyone but I think is a very interesting movie, and Franco is tremendous (to be honest, I doubt I will like him more in 127 Hours than I do here); Buried was a nifty little thriller but some bad story choices I feel will keep the film from developing a strong cult following which it could have; Legend of the Guardians is a mixed bag and pretty much what I’m coming to expect from a Snyder film- amazing visuals and terrible writing; while Money Never Sleeps was just a mess.

Saw Wall Street yesterday and I enjoyed it. I was disappointed that Gordon Gekko is pretty much a supporting character in this one, but Shia LaBeouf is a strong enough actor (I honestly don’t understand the hate he gets) and does very well in the lead role. But, I find the whole financial situation to be a fascinating subject.

I saw Catfish on Saturday. Wowsers, that was something. I almost don’t care if it was fake; not gonna spoil anything, so that’s all I’ll say.

    n8, are you being sarcastic?

Saw The Expendables (haha, I know, late) … so bland and no one cares.

Saw Money Never Sleeps … it’s not great, but I was very entertained. The movie is more flashy than gettin’ down & dirty; but I was kinda grateful for that? Wish Douglas was in it more, he was superb.

Saw Easy A … loved Emma Stone SO much that I wish the film was just that much better.

Inception still in the Top 10 … booyah.

Saw “Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work” – should be a no brainer for Oscar nomination, but it won’t be. Funniest film of 2010, surely, and probably the best celeb doco since “Madonna: Truth or Dare” in ’91. Bitter, brutal and gutsy, just like Rivers herself.

BTW, i know you were asking how to handle the box office now that Chad’s not doing it and while it’s nice to not have another box office column to read, it might be worthwhile to include some info on the limited release titles since, as far as Oscar goes, that’s where a lot of the action is at this time of the year. “Alpha and Omega 3D” not so much.

Saw Buried – agree with Chad terrible script and score. Some of the lamest dialog I have heard all year, made worst by the fact that I saw Social Network on Friday night.

Also saw The Town and Poetry (NYFF). Town was good and Poetry is decent.

    “Worst score of the year.”

100% agreed. It tried so hard to heighten the tension and came off really lame.

Saw Wall Street 2 and really liked it. I liked Devil as well. Did pretty good with what it had and worked the concept well enough.

Holy shit, Inception is still in the top 10. In a way, it’s b.o. run is more impressive than Dark Knight’s. Not only has it stayed in the top 10 longer, but for a movie that some thought wasn’t really accessible to a mainstream audience, it’s doin gangbusters!

I haven’t seen Legend of the Guardians but I may. I looked the footage from the very beginning. A very beautiful looking film.
