There’s zero extras! There’s so few extras that you put it in, you push play, and the movie starts. There are no trailers, there’s no bullshit at the beginning that you have to endlessly go through. I have a deal with the studio and it goes like this: Any movie I make that makes over a billion dollars goes out without a bunch of crap trailers for your other movies.
James Cameron, discussing the DVD/Blu-ray release of “Avatar” (which drops tomorrow).

i’m one of the few who actually likes to look at the features and listens to the commentary
4-disc superset is coming later this year.
Love the comments though, and he’s probably not that far from the truth.
Can’t wait to watch it in Blu-ray. And please be sure everyone to check out the website with the Tree-Planting Program info and sign up to adopt a tree! Earth Day is tomorrow and I think it’s very important we get behind the reason Cameron and Fox released the film specifically on Earth Day. This planet is our only home, lets work together to save it!
Argh.
The interview is just about him winning awards and money (same with the LA Times interview).
Does he care about anything else?
Ahh…nothing say Earth Day like the NFL Draft!
In primetime no less…
I love what he said about films being “creatures of their time,” and that he thinks going back to tamper with them a la George Lucas is the wrong thing to do. I agree 100%. The movie is the movie the minute it comes out, and nothing should ever change that.
I’ll watch special features and commentaries more than the actual movies sometimes; with my most beloved films.
clearly his shit don’t stink
I like extras…..
I like trailers…
I hate Cameron (not because of this comment, because of his trademarked arrogance)
I don’t think he’s talking about special features here. He’ll make money off of that in November with that 4-disc set. I think he’s referring to trailers for other movies, and the sense that I got is “I don’t want anyone riding my coattails and benefitting from my awesomeness!” But maybe that’s just me.
Saw Cameron at Starbucks this morning. He did not bring his own cup on Earth Day. tsk, tsk.
I won’t even think about buying this, renting this, watching this with friends, or, just in general, ever watching this again.
Anyone else find it ironic that a film stressing the importance of nature was filmed entirely with digital backgrounds?
Seriously, Cameron must have a hard time fitting his head through a door frame.
Part of the reason why people BUY dvds is to see the extras, hear the commentary.
What do you want? Good grammar or good taste?
I like trailers…
I’d want to watch trailers before be punished by this movie, personally…
In Cameron’s defense, there are a lot of really bad movies that get trailers in DVDs these days. Things I had never even heard of. Of course, an Avatar trailer in another DVD would qualify as really bad to me, but that is another story.
What no ferngully or pocahontas trailers to show us were he got his ideas from or sigourney shouting “if jim had a vagina he would a won it”,boo hoo.
I like how the first sentence of the quote is meant to be some reason for me to buy the movie. You’d think that he would want people to enjoy the special features, but I guess not? Odd thing to say. But then again, he’s rich, so he can be that pointlessly arrogant.
I’d actually prefer DVD menus that don’t reveal crucial/important/spoiler things in the film.
Did any other directors give you feedback on Avatar when it came out?
I remember Michael Mann was very inspired. He’s got a film that he’s doing on a fantasy subject and he wants to shoot it in 3-D.
HUH? What might this be? Anybody kow?
Cameron and his huge ego never cease to amaze me.
I don’t think I’m alone here, but in this post-Fight Club era of ours, there’s no reason for any DVD to be released sans special features of any kind. I know that plenty of people will buy the DVD just because they love the film, as well they should. And on select occasions, I’ll buy a DVD that is scant on features because I love the film enough. But in general, when I throw down my hard-earned scratch for a DVD, I expect to get my money’s worth–deleted scenes, commentary, featurettes, etc. Just one man’s two cents.
Gittes: I know Eric Roth is working on a space script, but not sure if that could be the same thing.
I’m kind of shocked that anyone still buys DVDs at all to be honest.
Do tell…
Me? Just among my circle, I don’t know anyone that’s bought one in years. If there’s something I want to see, I netflix it or if it’s just a clip I can usually find it online.
And you’re honestly shocked that the rest of the world hasn’t gone all-soft with this stuff yet? Music, I get. Movies: we’re a ways off.
