Double vision

Thanks to Glenn at Stale Popcorn for pointing me to this Australian one-sheet for “Fish Tank,” which deservedly took the BAFTA on Sunday for Best British Film. The designer is Jeremy Saunders, also responsible for that extraordinary “Antichrist” poster last year … someone Stateside needs to snap this guy up.

I’m not someone who gets worked up over posters (last year’s attrocious Star Trek poster not withstanding), but that is a great poster.

    Yeah, that is really unique.

Problem with US posters is that we so frequently fall victim to the trite “floaing head” design. You know them when you see them: The cheesy collection of main characters hovering creepily above title. “Traffic” is one that immediately comes to mind.

    And don’t forget Avatar.

All of the “Fish Tank” posters I’ve seen have been great. Now I just need to see the damn thing.

Great poster, great film. Also, I dig the tagline. Much better (and more apt) than Armond White’s “Life’s a bitch and then you die/that’s why we get high” branding of the film.

Sorry, what’s so great about it? He knows how to play with font and put in a drop shadow?

And do the marketing teams realize there must be other stills from the film to use? The repetition of this image is silly.

Kris, that’s exactly what makes it great. Too many movie posters are cookie cutter versions of each other. This one has some character.

Kris, I don’t think this poster is anywhere on par with something like “Antichrist”, but it’s nice to see a poster for this sort of movie at least try to be visually creative and be a little bit different. All the posters I’ve seen for this movie have been very generic, but this one throws a bit of visual trickery into the pot and makes it stand out more.

I do like the idea of looking through the window at this girls’ life, which is really the gist of the movie as a whole.

I don’t think the film is “looking through a window,” which indicates some relative distance from matters. Moreover, I think the film is concerned with evoking place and atmosphere and putting you right in the middle of that. So with that in mind, the artwork fails on a whole other level.

Just sayin’… Maybe I’m just cranky.

Deservedly my foot. Moon is one billion times better than this piece of trash cinema that’s all about, well, NOTHING.

What on Earth (pun not intended) does “Moon” have to do with ANYTHING “Fish Tank” related?

Matt is referring to the fact that “Fish Tank” beat “Moon” to the Best British Film BAFTA.
