Predict the NYFCC Awards

Tilda Swinton in JuliaAfter surprising myself with the number of LAFCA categories I called yesterday, I’m set to disprove my newfound prescience by predicting today’s New York Film Critics’ Circle awards.

Many are thinking the New Yorkers’ highbrow urban sensibility will favor “A Serious Man,” — but I don’t know if they’ll want to crown the Coens just two years after they last did so. Others think they may offer “Up in the Air” compensation for its meager showing yesterday, but it seemed more an L.A.-style pick to me.

It may seem foolhardy to predict a repeat of yesterday’s LAFCA wins in the top two categories, but it wouldn’t be unprecedented: “Brokeback Mountain” nabbed Best Picture and Director honors from both groups in 2005, and the indie edge (and low box-office) of “The Hurt Locker” gives it the feel of a cause that critics’ groups won’t mind joining forces to champion.

What are your best guesses?

Best Picture: “The Hurt Locker”
Best Director: Kathryn Bigelow, “The Hurt Locker”
Best Actor: Colin Firth, “A Single Man”
Best Actress: Tilda Swinton, “Julia”
Best Supporting Actor: Christoph Waltz, “Inglourious Basterds”
Best Supporting Actress: Mo’Nique, “Precious”
Best Screenplay: Joel and Ethan Coen, “A Serious Man”
Best Foreign Language Film: “35 Shots of Rum”
Best Documentary: “The Beaches of Agnes”
Best Animated Feature: “Coraline”
Best Cinematography: Greig Fraser, “Bright Star”
Best First Film: “Sin Nombre”

Having won the Gotham Awards as well, I do think there’s a strong chance that The Hurt Locker will curry some love here. If not, I’d hope that at least Bigelow continues to win.

By the way, I realize how cheap it is to pimp oneself and I’m usually against it, but I’d like to generate traffic. I was just recently appointed to the writing staff at PopMatters.com, and I’m going to be writing various articles, including Oscar predictions and related topics. I just wrote my second article, linked above, so I would love it if anyone could read and comment to give , and let me know what you think (albeit without personal acknowledgement, of course). It would be helpful for them to see having an awards segment frequently is a benefit to the site.

Thanks to anyone who does in advance =).

I would replace “Coraline” with “Fantastic Mr. Fox” but other than that, I agree with your predix, Guy.
