David Fincher’s “The Social Network” may be a firm fixture in my top 10, but any critics organization that opts out of flowing through the season like sheep is alright by me. Yesterday, the Phoenix set joined those thin ranks by going with “The King’s Speech” for it’s Best Picture victor.

LIFE WITHOUT OSCAR: 2003 and 2004
Posted by Chad Hartigan · 9:34 pm · December 28th, 2010
Catch up with the idea behind this series here. 2003 belonged to “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” as it won every single award it was up for, tying the all time record haul of 11 trophies. Few could argue that Peter Jackson had accomplished something unique with the execution of […]

Inevitable list of WGA ineligibilities surfaces
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 7:42 pm · December 28th, 2010
Steve Pond is on the news today that a number of this year’s screenplays will be ineligible for WGA consideration (and therefore should be kept in mind when nominations are revealed next week). First and foremost, we all know Pixar films never fall under WGA signatory regulations, so Michael Arndt’s work on “Toy Story 3” […]

What came after “the year of the woman?”
Posted by Guy Lodge · 3:26 pm · December 27th, 2010
This time last year, we were still in the thick of a long-running “year of the woman” narrative, as female filmmakers enjoyed critical, festival and box-office success, plus an unprecedentedly high profile in the awards season –culminating in that history-making Best Director win for Kathryn Bigelow (as well as a Best Picture nod for Lone […]

Portman and child
Posted by Guy Lodge · 1:01 pm · December 27th, 2010
Put it down to the post-Christmas news lull, but the Oscarweb is rather excited about this morning’s unexpected revelation that surefire nominee (and arguable Best Actress favorite) Natalie Portman is engaged and expecting her first child with French ballet dancer and choreographer Benjamin Millepied. (Could you ask for a much more appropriate surname for a […]

‘Black Swan’ leads Online Film Critics Society noms
Posted by Guy Lodge · 8:58 am · December 27th, 2010
The nominations list just announced by the OFCS features most of the expected names, but with a few welcome twists: nice to see Edgar Ramírez and LAFCA winner Kim Hye-ja lending some international flavor in the lead acting categories, while the Best Original Screenplay bid for “Greenberg” cuts pleasingly against the grain. Interesting, too, to […]

POLL: Predict the Best Picture 10
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 8:49 am · December 27th, 2010
Now that we’re deep into the precursor season and it seems there are 11 legitimate contenders for 10 Best Picture slots, it seemed a good time to revisit this poll. I’ve slotted those 11 in the left sidebar, with the obligatory “other” option for those of you who want to predict a curve ball (and […]

Catch up with the idea behind these weekend posts here. Granted, Christmas isn’t universal, but is anyone making it to this page between the turkey and ham and mistletoe and Darlene Love? If so, we thank you for squeezing IC into your holiday craziness (though we all know you’re just ducking the relatives for a […]

INTERVIEW: ‘The Illusionist’ producer Bob Last
Posted by Guy Lodge · 6:44 pm · December 24th, 2010
It’s been over 10 months since I first reviewed Sylvain Chomet’s dazzling new animated feature “The Illusionist” at the Berlinale, and yet it only finds its way to US theaters tomorrow. A more appropriate film to unwrap on Christmas morning, however, you could not ask for. Both a loving tribute to the creative legacy of […]

Guardian shortlists 10 titles for Best First Film
Posted by Guy Lodge · 11:17 am · December 24th, 2010
When I was filling out my ballot for indieWIRE’s 2010 critics’ poll, Best First Film was perhaps the category I spent the longest time deliberating over — as unremarkable as the year has been in other respects, the amount of scrappy new directorial promise surging up through the cracks has been both unusually high and […]
