I know I’m hardly the first person to mention it, but as I was fiddling around with my predictions recently, I was struck once more by just how young the Best Actress category is skewing. At present, 15 year-old Saoirse Ronan is the only teenager being talked up for a nomination, but with three other […]

‘Avatar’ sequel a possibility, says producer Jon Landau
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 12:22 pm · September 30th, 2009
Okay, let me first connect the dots on how I came to this nugget: Le Film via /Film via MTV. Now that that’s out of the way… It goes without saying there will be a lot of people looking at the bottom line on “Avatar,” so any talk of a sequel is obviously silly until […]

THE LONG SHOT: What are precursors for, anyway?
Posted by Guy Lodge · 11:00 am · September 30th, 2009
I didn’t time my holiday to coincide with the sleepiest week of awards season, but that’s how it panned out anyway. While I spent 10 days drinking my way along the canals of France’s Burgundy region, divorced from my computer screen and, I admit, any thoughts of Oscar whatsoever, the industry, too, took a collective […]

Bigelow, Ephron, ‘Up,’ ‘Transformers’ to be honored at Hollywood fest
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 9:50 am · September 30th, 2009
The awards keep coming for “The Hurt Locker” director Kathryn Bigelow, who is already set to be feted at the Gotham Independent Film Awards. As her film’s star Jeremy Renner takes down the Breakthrough Actor award at the upcoming Hollywood Film Festival, Bigelow herself will receive the Hollywood Director Award, fest director Carlos de Abreu […]

‘Brooklyn’s Finest’ to 2010
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 8:35 am · September 30th, 2009
I just noticed the fine print on an invite today that stated “Brooklyn’s Finest,” recently acquired by Overture Films after Senator Entertainment had to give it up, has been slated for a Spring 2010 release. The film first landed at Sundance and had its champions there. In particular, I’ve been hearing a lead actor push […]

Foreign-language tally rises to 57
Posted by Guy Lodge · 12:45 am · September 30th, 2009
Though that number will probably be out of date the second I post this, such is the crush of films squeezing in before the deadline these last few days. Any, the latest trio of contenders come from minor national film industries all seeking their first nomination in the category: Estonia, Bangladesh and Indonesia. Estonia’s entry, […]

Attention smart phone users. If you ever check us out on a BlackBerry or iPhone, you’ll notice we’ve now got a more user-friendly interface on those devices. Unfortunately there’s an image alignment issue I can’t quite work out, but anyway, let us know if it works for you or not.

Selling ‘Antichrist’: arthouse or genre?
Posted by Guy Lodge · 4:45 pm · September 29th, 2009
As we’ve seen from the wildly varied poster designs for the film, “Antichrist” offers it marketers an unusual range of options. Depending on the region, it’s being sold as a stern art film, a jokey provocation, a horror scream-fest or a mixture of all three. We have yet to see how the film performs Stateside, […]

‘Last Station’ to Sony Classics?
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 2:41 pm · September 29th, 2009
Obviously the only thing Pete Hammond can mean when he writes the following: Helen Mirren, Christopher Plummer, James McAvoy and Paul Giamatti are going to try to shake up the awards season. Look for their new film, “The Last Station” — written and directed by Michael Hoffman and based on the final months in the life […]

French ‘Hurt Locker’ poster
Posted by Guy Lodge · 1:15 pm · September 29th, 2009
No real reason, just noticed this poster plastered all over Paris when I was there recently and liked it. The title change (it means “Defusers”) is a little bland, but probably necessary: the metaphorical English title really doesn’t translate.

Tornatore to represent Italy in Oscar race again
Posted by Guy Lodge · 12:45 pm · September 29th, 2009
As the deadline for Best Foreign Language Film submissions looms on October 1, news of further entries keeps rolling in. Italy, Vietnam and Norway are the latest additions to the list, which presently numbers 54. (By my count, at least.) Italy’s selection is obviously the newsiest: the country’s 13 previous wins make it the leading […]

Australia and Spain enter foreign-language race
Posted by Guy Lodge · 11:33 am · September 29th, 2009
As regular readers have probably noticed, I’ve been away (undeservedly, apparently) on vacation for the past week or so, so I’ve missed out on the recent influx of submissions for the Best Foreign Language Film race. Fortunately, Kris has been keeping you up to speed with our new foreign contenders page. Thanks, meanwhile, to the […]

The Fox Searchlight release recalls legendary aviator Amelia Earhart, starring two-time Academy Award winner Hilary Swank and Golden Globe winner Richard Gere. The new fest is part of a long-term […]

THE LISTS: Top 10 Robert Duvall performances
Posted by John Foote · 8:06 am · September 29th, 2009
With “Get Low” bringing actor Robert Duvall back to the spotlight, and Sony’s purchase of the film no doubt landing him in the Oscar race for Best Actor (whether released this year or next), I thought perhaps a look back at the legend’s substantial carer and best performances might be fun. Since his first brilliant […]
